    Hi Guys.

This is my first post here.

I have been browsing around and reading through some of the threads relating to setup.

I have not yet got my Tank, but plan to get it within the next month or so.

I just want to know, because im on a budget, a very tight budget, what can i expect to get for around R5000.

I recently went into a pet store in Durban, and was quoted R4500 for a Boyu 450 tank, complete setup, without Fish, Live Rock, Sand...

Can you please give me some advice.

Also, would appreciate it if someone could let me know if they know of any retailers in the Durban area that they would recoomend, i go see..

    Thank You

Hi Immo, welcome to MASA, glad you joined. Before buying anything, please read the link in my signature for some good info on how to start your first marine tank. This will also give you an idea of the equipment you'll need.
Those little Boyu's are nice, but a small tank is not that stable regarding water parameters as the big ones. Small changes can have a big effect, so do proper homework and ask us lots of questions - it's free :)
Have a look in the for sale forums, you might get a good deal on a secondhand tank and equipment ;)

    Thanks for the welcome guys.

    I will try Northlands Pets.

I have been a a couple already, but most dont seem to even know what they are talking about.

    That is my biggest worry..

I dont want to have to invest so much of money and then sit with something that i need to spend more money on sorting out.

Welcome Immo, as Tobes recommends - read the links he has supplied.
There is a great deal to learn in reef tank care and startup, as you said, you dant want to spend all the money to find that you have to spend more to get what you have to work right...

There are many people who have been keeping reef tank for a long time and will advise you accordingly. Don't go to any pet shops yet, reasearch as much info as you can through MASA.

You will be grateful you did at the end of the day, and turn out a much better tank than those who just rush into buying a ref aquarium and populate it prior to filtration systems are running properly.

Hi Immo. Also try qualipet - they can custom make very good quality stands and tanks for very reasonable prices. Other equipment such as skimmers etc, Northlands is definitely your best bet. Good luck!

    Warm welcome to you!

The best thing to do is read and learn as much as possible before you start. And only use advise from trusted and recommended aquarium shop employees. I spent months on the internet before attempting a reef tank. Must say it helped (haven't lost any livestock up to now) Hope it stays this way though :)
