Hi.i have a new Boyu TL550. I have added water and live rock and have been cycling for about a week but have noticed that the UV lamp is really noisy (and it isn't even plugged in!).

Initially I thought it was the pump, and well pumps are noisy so tried to ignore it, but then realized that when I disconnected the plastic pipe from the uv lamp the noise stopped completely even though the pump was still running.

Is this normal? Does anyone have a TL 550 near me that I can come and listen to.

Beginning to think I am going mad

    I assume it's a ballast?

Plenty ballasts make noise, if it's causing something to vibrate try pop a peice of air tube/pump pipe in to wedge it to stop the noise if possible.

    Hope you work it out.

That lamp is loose and flow causes it to vibrate.

I have double checked the lamp is not loose at all and is not rattling against anything. Surrounding the thing with filter floss has not helped. It only makes a noise when the water is flowing through it ( whether it is plugged in or not). Think it is not normal :(

Hi. I am in bergvliet but am willing to go anywhere in cape town to listen to another Boyu TL 550 in action...
Maybe I am just being difficult but I would not have thought that a lamp would make any noise at all

Hi - thanks for the comments everyone!

I have determined it is not the lamp that is noisy as it still made a racket after I removed the lamp. Then started to blame the pump but have finally realized that it is actually the spray bar!!

If I remove the spray bar the pump is quite (and the levels in the rear compartments are all quite high). If I add the spray bar the pump is noisy but the levels in the rear compartments are higher an not a problem for the heater.

Have now removed the spray bay and moved the heater to the first compartment but am rather concerned that the heater is now touching the sponge and all sorts of things are now breading in there......

Has anyone else had this problem?

I have the same issue on mine - I wanted to install a bigger pump - and it just made it worse....what i ended up doing.....drilled the holes in the spraybar bigger - reduce back pressure on the pump - no more noise! :)

Tank is almost new so cleaning bar will not help. Had not thought of enlarging holes  Will try this evening...

    Hi and welcome :)

    1) I added two small pieces of live rock under the pump to lift it off the bottom to prevent it rattling on the base.

    2) I took out the uv lamp as it is not necessary. I simply bought another piece of tube and connected the pump and the spray bar directly. I add the lamp back when I add new fish.

    3) I added filter floss into the 1st & 3rd chambers to stop the waterfall noise and finally

    4) I also drilled larger holes into the spray bar.

Now the tank is absolutely silent except for the sound of the fans in the hood.

    Definitely worth doing!!

    Good luck

I have a new TL 550 tank and the UV light is so noisy we are forced to switch off the tank when we want to watch TV. The red light is always on - is this normal?
