    Hello MASA

I set my new tank up on Saturday and one of my main goals was to have reduced noise. The current overflow setup is a durso standpipe with central overflow box (see attached pic.

I was under the impression that this was a quiet overflow design but the sound of water running down the pipes is driving me crazy. Everything else in my system is dead quiet except for this constant noise from the overflow.

I have put allot of thought into this and can only think of one solution. Simply put, I want to adjust the ball valve in the overflow plumbing to raise the water level up in the pipe, I'm hoping that this will reduce the sound of falling water. The main problem with this is the possibility of flooding if the flow rate down the overflow plumbing slows down at all.

My idea is to take a piece of flexible fish tank piping and drill it into the top of the elbow that sits in the overflow box. The pipe would then exit out the back of the pipes on the outside of the tank (See diagram 2). The flexible pipe would effective become my emergency drain pipe.

Do you think this idea would work? Any ideas on how to make the exit point airtight? Really want to get this sorted because I am going crazy with this noise.

    Thanks

Yep, as I said I think the majority of the noise is from the +/- 1 meter fall.

Not sure if it will work for you but I tried a valve/tap at the bottom just before it hit the sump and I restricted the flow a little
The slight build up at the exit drastically reduced the noise
Bought from pool shop - simple plastic valve

The noise from the water entering the sump isn't bad at all. I want to limit the flow up the entire back section of the pipe so that the water only falls 10-15cm when entering the overflow piping

Can you make your standpipe shorter?

the top end outside, does it have a female end-cap on it?
If yes, does it have a small little hole and air valve?

other thing you can change is the 90 degree elbow at the botom of the drop. Replace with 45 degree and a short straight piece then another 45 degrees. Will lessen the splatter inside in the 90 degree elbow

@erratiC standpipe is as short as possible.
@RiaanP There is a cap and there is a hole, still need to try that airline method. The pipes are already configured with 2 45 degree elbows and the noise is still pretty loud.

Does anyone know why that airline method does reduce noise?
