Hi Guys. I have a Reef Octopus ORCA-100 in sump skimmer. rated 600 litres
Its only been running for 3 weeks now and for the past 2 days the pump sounds like a diesel truck idling. Please can someone tell me what this noise is or what it could be :baffled:

llewellyn, just unhook it , open it up and see if it hasnt "sucked" in something and that the impeller and shaft is still in tackt

I had the same problem, also an orca 100 int, also after about 3-weeks, the impeller is bent (take it out and check against a straight edge), take it back to your supplier to have the impeller replaced, you have a 1-year guarantee and they must replace it.

Thats what I thought, and I did open it up and nothing was stuck. Put it back in and its silent but after a few minutes the noise starts again.

Thanks Neo, okay just to clear things up is the shaft that thin stick that goes in and the impeller the the part which has a magnet that fits into the pump?

yip -uh yes i mean (my father-in-law complains when i use yip), in my case the impeller was bend and you could see it with no trouble.

one other thing, there are two very small washers that goes on either side of the impeller onto the shaft, they sit between the impeller and the rubber bush, the bush is inside the casing as well as the cap that you lock down, ensure these washers are in place.

Yes they are in place. I got the shock of my life when 1 of those tiny washers almost fell down the sink. Was putting it back together on the floor after that:lol:
I'll check if everything has a straight edge because I cleaned it out and put it back together in tackt. Maybe the shaft is slightly bent. Thanks for your help bud:thumbup:

Same thing happened to me last night with my ORCA-100-Int.

Bought it from Lanzo. Just waiting for his reply.

I had to get a replacement impellar. It worked for like 2 days then the noise started again. I took it back and got the whole pump replaced. Good Luck Sentari. It's a common problem with these pumps. Might be just your impellar though

mine starts the rumble-moan-rattle sound when it gets dirty, just pull the pump out, dismantle the insides and clean, flush the hole the impellor goes into with a strong jet of water, will be happy for another 2 months.
(i have added a proper filter sock now, should take longer to get dirty this time)

Mine had the same problem (Orca 135 INT). It isn't the pump that makes the noise but rather the whole skimmer vibrating on the glass. I just put some rubber pads under the skimmer and problem solved.

Trust me its the pump / impellor.

They have bubble plates and rubber feet on the OTP-2000. I know when its a pump or when its the skimmer etc.

I am with Manic on this Henk...both mine have been running for 6 moths (without a clean etc) no probs. In your case I think its the bucket it is standing on actulattly vibrating on the glass. I have some rubber matting in my car, will give you some when I see you later

cleaned it out now for the 3rd time. it seems the impeller is shifting to the front. its got a 7 to 9 mm travel on the shaft and it then runs against the front cover. Am i missing a spacer of some sort?

I've got two spacer on mine. A thin washer on the bottom and a thick washer on top (Above the impeller).

I still think it is from vibrations on the glass though. I tried everything on mine until I put rubber feet on the bottom of the skimmer.
