    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of investigating skimmers. I am starting to take excessive flak about the drone on my current skimmer ( Wife can't sleep). I tend to disagree that it is loud. In fact I think that it is pretty silent.

That being said, I would rather replace it for something more silent and keep the tank, than continue arguing and eventually lose the tank.

I currently have a Tunze DOC 9210. I have a standard 4ft tank with a standard 3ft tank as a sump. The budget for replacement is R1500.

Thanks in advance for all the advise!

The tunze should be quiet! Is the noise coming from the actual pump that SWAMBO is moaning about?

Put the wife outsde and buy more stuff...... Seriously, skimmers are generaly noisey due to the "mixing" of the air with water action of the impeller. Most skimmers come with a plastic silencer which is placed on the end of the air intake line. If you dont have one fit one. These are normally removed to improve skimmer efficiency. Noise often comes from the vibration from the pump if it's an external unit. You could place something soft between skimmer and tank base to isolate the vibration.
If all else fails, a glass (or 3) of red wine could work (for the wife)

    good luck..

lOl - thanks guys, the noise could be a vibration, but i am not sure. SWAMBO doesnt mind the water noise - ie water falling into overflow - but the motor drone is what is irritating her.

At the moment I am looking into Reef Octopus NW 100 and the Reeftek TS2 - does anyone have any idea about how loud these are, how does the sound compare if they are pump fed and gravity fed, if this is possible?

Lots of questions - but isnt that the norm with Marine tanks.

Thanks again for all the expert advise.
