So I was wandering what everybody else's take is on this do we use it or not. The question here is is it a good idea to have your circulation pumps go into night mode meaning that as the lights go out the flow in the tank reduces to a set flow and return back to normal when lights come back on again. Would like to hear some of the other reefers oppinions on this one.

Hi Pete, I use it, but in reality does the ocean calm down at night?

I think it is just a gimmick built into our controllers.

I don't think that there is any benefit in a system like mine. Just leads to detritus settlement. Would prefer nice random flow to one that turns down when lights go out.

My Vortech pumps go into night mode at about 21h00. Don't know if it makes the world of difference to the tank, but what I have observed is that the Cleaner Shrimp and hermits are more active when the pumps are turned down. As soon as the pumps go into night mode, the shrimps are all over the tank. There favourite spot is cleaning the sponge guards around the wetside of the pumps.

So they enjoy the night mode!

I use the night mode on my vortech because the clown never goes into the rocks or anything, so I just figured it give him a chance to sleep at night. I wouldn't say its really natural, like you say the sea doesn't just calm down because its night.
