Got an opportunity to do a night dive on Aliwal shoal on Friday. Permission has been obtained so it could be quite exciting. I am told that night diving on the Shoal is quite rare. Anyone done it ?

Yup i am also a little edgy. Done about 8 night dives, mainly at the Red Sea and Miracle waters where the waves are nonexistent. So the night boat launch will be a first.

Thanks Bud. Yes i dive with a professional outfit where safety is No 1 priority. We will not go out just for the sake of going out. Conditions have to be favorable and safe for diving.

Enjoy your dive. Did the Red Sea night dives as well. Once on a reef, twice on wrecks. Awesome, combined with that uncomfortable feeling that something is eyeing you hungrily from the safety of darkness . . .

Surely you've tried puddlehopping at night, it's awesome!

And night diving is even better, done >300 over the last 25 years... Hope you get your dive and the conditions are good.

Apart from the adrenalin fix. There is educational value. One gets to see how the fish sleep and hide, and how the nocturnal species hunt.

I've done specimen collection off the old Durban North Pier at night.
Amazing how easy it is to catch big butterflies and surgeons with a torch in the dark.

Got hooked by some of the fisherman once or twice. Luckily they realized that moving light wasn't a fish and so didn't try reel me in.

Well worth the experience, its a whole different world down there after dark.
