    Hi to all the Members,

I am a share holder in a CTFM restaurant and we have two 2m x 1m x1m marine aquariums stocked with fish only. I have decided to get involved in the maintenance of the fish tanks (which is presently done by a private company).

To start with, I would like to aquire a few books on Marine Aquariums. Any suggestions? The next step would be to get the salt water mix right. Suggestions on products? Is it necessary to use reverse osmosis water or can SA tapwater be used and if so how is it treated?

Please bear with me. I pressume that most of the answers can be found in previous threads. In time I will work through the threads.

    Regards
    Etienne Pienaar

Hi and Welcome to MASA. Could you give us some pics of your tank as they always help along. I wouldn't use tap water as they have too many pollutants. You have to use RO water which you can make yourself or buy from a good pet shop. I would prefer it if you bought your own as too many pet shops dont change the filters too often leaving you with water high in solids. A decent RO unit costs about R1500-00 and you can contact "The Waterboy" as he is a sponsor on the forum.

Do you know what protein skimmer you have there?

hi etienne, welcome to masa its great to have you guys here:)

CTFM have some great tanks and ive spoken to a few of your managers (lone hill in particular) a number of times. Ive always thought that the guys doing your maintanece do a very good job, although i think its far better for someone within the chain to understand what it is to ahve a marine tank and what it is that the mantanece company does.

I think that the tanks that CTFM have are an asset to each and every restaurant, but there is stuff you can do which would greatly improve them.

This is a great place to learn and reading through threads and following discussions is worth while. Learning what compatibility and feeding of the different fish that are in tanks is facinating.

welcome to masa and let the questions flow:)

    happy postings :)
