Hi, my name is Brandon and I am getting back into the hobby after a break of about 20 years. No tank yet but busy planning and designing a 4 ft system.

I realise that the hobby has progressed significantly since my days of collecting specimens on the KZN coast. What i would like to know from more experienced members is how advisable is it to collect LR instead of buying it?

Hi Brandon, welcome to MASA !

Collection of LR off the beach is, as far as I know, not exactly legal. I think you could get into a bit of trouble if the parkies catch you.

I am going to take my "dead rock" and hang it off the side of a boat for a few weeks. With all the stuff growing on the marina and on the bottom of the boat, it won't take long before it is well seeded !

Regarding collecting LR, maybe the others here could shed some light on it !!

As a SCUBA diver, my opinion is no, leave it as you found it !

Generally our local liverock is not as porous as the imported rock from Kenya or where ever.
