I'm brand new to marine tanks- in fact, about to build one for my plecostomus for winter (he's thriving in my koi pond!). I'll turf him back into pond around mid-sept when it warms up and convert his old home into a marine tank.

Thanks for the response so far. I have hundreds!
    1) Is a protein skimmer absolutely essential?
    2) Surely two powerheads with filters will work well as filters? Fill one with klinofish material, teh other with shale/shell
    3) Do undergravel filters work well in a marine environment?

Hi and welcome to MASA. I would be cautious when converting a freshwater tank to marine. All the different medications and water conditioners for fresh water can get absorbed into the silicone and that can cause problems once you start running marine. If you still want to use the same tank then you would have to remove the old silicone and reseal it with new silicone and you will also have to clean out the tank. Some guys are running undergravel filters but in reverse and it seems to be working for them. The powerheads with built in filters are more for tropical fish than marine. The can be huge detris traps and that can cause havoc with your parameters. With this hobby patience is key and ask quetions.
