    Hello Everybody!

After reading and reading and reading some more, I am ready to embark on this journey. I would love it if some-experienced-in-building-tanks-and-sumps-person near me would be willing to hold my hand with my 150x60x50 DIY ideal in terms of design and creation......:)
Failing that, perhaps point me to a reputable tank builder?

Owning a marine tank has been on my wish list for many years, and I want to do it right - from the beginning - I am all for vicarious learning.

Thank you in advance for all the hand-holding and input. :m106:

    Hello and Welcome Lilith

I would start by first looking into the for sale section. There could be a similar size system available. If you know nothing about tank building, I would rather start with a completed tank. There will always ber chances to play with silicone. After all, if you got no medical background, you will not attempt open heart surgery after a week of googling.

But I do agree, there is a lot of fun in building up a system. To be able to say "I've build that". But I would still start with a second hand system, learn the basics and by 6 months, you will know what you want and what your personal preference would be for your dream marine tank.

Enjoy this hobby. Its very addictive.

Thats vey good advice, knowing what I know now I would do exactly that. I could have bought a whole system for the same price as what I spent on my glass and stand alone.

Thank you guys, for the sound advice - I shall now go on a mission to find a good 2nd hand setup.

Dallas - I am looking for a 150 x 60 x 50(h). I have a particular place to fill in the lounge :) Would love to speak re any equipment etc that you have to sell...

while I am at it - just a question:
I have a boyu 550 sitting around which I want to use as a QT (yes??). In the meantime, I have discovered a lfs which is shutting down its marine section and selling their LR at R60/kg. Do you think its feasable for me to go buy a bunch of rock at that price, and keep it running in the boyu until I have a proper DT?

Thanks Riaan. Yes, I am a huge fan of prophylactic measures, especially when it comes to little creatures of any sort, so it WILL indeed be used as a QT!

Ok, so there is a change in plan now. Unforseen financial circumstances dictate, unfortunately. So, over the next hopefully-not-too-many-months I will s_l_o_w_l_y acquire all the necessary for my 'Tank to Be" In the mean time, I will rehome the poor rescued Betta which is swimming around happily in the Boyu 550 (designated QT tank for Tank To Be) into a 2ft, and start a nano in the Boyu, as its prettymuch good to go - need to sort out back up power for these powercuts (had 12 hour blackout on monday), get some more LR, aragonite, testing kit etc etc and then will be able to begin a cycle. :) By the time I have everything sorted for Tank-to-Be, I will at least have a few goodies from the Boyu to be able to place in it once its cycle is over, and Boyu can then become the QT again.... and if it takes longer than hoped for to aquire everything, at least I will still be able to play fish-fish in my Boyu.

And...5 months later.....I finally managed to get the bits and bobs in place and my Display tank is finally starting its cycle. In the mean time - I have a fire goby in week 6 of quarantine (started with a Methylene blue dip, then the 4x transfer method as preventatives, then only did I start counting the QT weeks. (this took lots of big water changes as I had no biological filter. The Goby Quarantine tank is finally cycled now). I also have a blood shrimp in week 3 of his quarantine, and 3 pieces of live rock which I only got on saturday, also in quarantine. I have read so much on groups and forums of people losing fish at a rapid rate due to infections sweeping the display tank that I am scared to death of putting anything in without an 8 - 10 week quarantine. Attached - Pics of my new water family and the murky cycling tank.

Just a few questions: The creatures (starfish and mushrooms so far) on my live rock, which is in quarantine and getting huge daily water changes in an effort to preserve as much life as possible - (ammonia levels are at 0.) What will they eat?? Must I feed them?

yes - I do have a lid. The only thing I dont have yet for the DT is light - but that will be in place by the end of the Cycle. I want to go LED. Any suggestions? I want to go mainly softies and lps. I am not sure how to work out what I need in terms of light. (watts, Kelvin, etc) ........
