    Hiya All

I just wanted to clarify this as I'm not 100% sure. When starting a new setup, once you add substrate (I'm using aragonite) and cured live rock within the first week, will the cycle begin automatically or do I need to add something to cause it to begin? Also do I need to add a bacteria starting product or will that happen automatically from the live-rock?

    Thanks
    Daniel

You will have to feed the tank an ammonia source to kick start the cycle. Whether its a pure ammonia source or another food source does not matter. But you have to kickstart it.

    Hi Daniel,

"The cycle" requires some food source to feed the bacterial populations that will bloom in your tank. I would add a small piece of prawn in a filter sock or stockings. The amount of food you want to start with depends on the size of your tank, and how you are planning to stock it. Personally I would strongly advise starting smaller (bioload wise) and very gradually adding livestock thereafter. You do not need to add bacteria, the live rock will be host to bountiful colonies. Also, if the live rock is not properly cured then it will likely carry some detritus and die off with it, also feeding the cycle.

Ok great, thanks. I plan on adding livestock very slowly ye, So I could just use one of those small frozen prawns, defrost it, and put it my tank to start the cycle? Sounds delectable ;)
