HI I have been urged to start a new thread to tell everyone who i am and my set-up etc..I have been breeding fish since I was 6 and started breeding marine fish about 6 years ago..I am currently doing my masters in oceonography (specialised in Mariculture). I have a few systems...A display in the house, 1,5x500x500, a 1m curved glass tank in my room and I have the coral/fish farm in the "green house" in the back...I have been working on a number of systems to run marine more cheaply, Hav made alot of equipment, skimmers dosers, electronic controller (Thanx2Reg) etc..I have run my farm for just on 2 years and have have 0 NO3 and 0 PO4..I have only done 2 10% water changes over the last 2 years! just the way i like it..!well thats enuff about me,I better stop before my head swells too much... :)

Awesome setup, what coral are you farming at present and what would you say is the easiest with best return on investment species to look at ?

I hav joined at strange time..I am actually not farming anything at this moment..I have just stopped farming (as i am selling off the farm), reason being if all go.s well I will be on marion island for a year so can afford to run the system...
In terms of species that giv good return....
fish difinatly the imfomous nemo (common clown)
in terms of coral I believe the quickest and easiest is a diversity of softies..mushrooms and leathers! and then a few of the more vibrant colours will always do well..rics etc...

That is interesting, how do you compete with the imported clowns at $1 a fish ?

thats 1 us dollar excluding shipping and DOA'S ;)
Aquaculutred species are hardy..shipped within 4hrs to any major airport in SA with WAY less DOA's..even though most people say they will pay more for quaculured spp the fact is they will only pay the same price..so as long as the Retail price is the same its all good!

Seriously I would love to see this take off locally, clownfish in particular don't ship well. The LFS's I have spoken to normally order in the hundreds, because they know only 20 will arrive alive.

What sort of price do you sell to the LFS ?

Then the next BIG question, how do you set up breeding tanks that maximises the birth-rate

well first of all this farm was set-up for research for my masters so I did not sell to LFS's I did do a survey and the local shops did say they would take all the fish I could possble sell them..At a good price of couse..depending on numbers and survivourship after metamorphasis it would be in the range of R25-30 a fish..

Well that I cant tell you...any where and every where...Just filter all the junk out there...and by November I wil have my thesis done..It contains a market study feasability cost etc...but I hav2 admit that the hobbysts hav dissapointed me..Loads of guys want info but are not willling to fill out a simple survey...I got a dismal responce on a national and regional survey..in total I only got about ten people who were willing to fill out my survey :(
