    Hello all,

I am Brendon, I used to keep planted aquariums for a while and really love it, but unfortunately I had to stop. I was about to start again when I was offered a 4ft marine tank with sump, skimmer and cabinet for R1300 so I took it. This is what I have

I would like to start a Reef tank, I will buy a 4ft quad t5 unit if that is what is required.

Please tell me what else I need and if my skimmer is complete, I don't know how any of this works. :)

    Thanks Brendon

    Hello and welcome

your skimmer is a Reeftek TS1 and it does look complete. Although a TS2 would have been better on a 4foot system, the TS1 will do.

Anyway a TS2 will not fit into that little sump. Those sumps are mainly designed for fish only systems. They used to be filled with ceramic rings and bio-balls. But with the new Orca Cubes it could work actually better than the original concept.

Thanks guys, I will definitely go through those threads, just a question though. My skimmer, is it complete or is it not possible to tell from the pic? I need to get a new one if it's not complete. Please let me know.

Thanks Riaan, so I should keep the sump then? This is so much more complicated then plants.

with the Orca cubes, yes then I would keep that sump. The issue is that those cabinets got a central vertical wooden support that really is in the way to have a proper sized sump in place. Unless you remove it, build in a steel support and can fit a larger sump from the back. Rather go now with what you have.

Thanks guys, so as I said, I will go through each of the threads posted earlier but just for some quick info, aside from the quad t5 unit that I will buy, what else should I purchase to get started? I assume that the price I paid was decent so I'm willing to spend a little.

So, correct me if I'm wrong but from my understanding, If I get a decent lighting system and the necessary filter media, substrate etc I'll be able to start a beginner kinda reef tank with this equipment right?

Return pump? A normal pump for the sump? if that's what you're talking about then yes.

A pump that returns water from the sump to the display. That pump in the photograph is the skimmer's bubble pump.

Speaking of which, does the skimmer pump have a venturi? (The rubber pipe with silencer connects to it)

I think that's in the front left of the tank, some airline tubing with a black plastic fitting on the end? And yes, I have a return pump.
