Hi, I am obviously new to the MASA site as well as the Marine world.
I have just added two captive bred clown fish and they have taken really well to
    there new home.

I have a 1800X700X700 tank with a skinny overflow and deep sand bed.
loving the hobby, kids and my wife are very involved.

Not sure how to upload pics yet!

It's a great hobby, glad you and the family are enjoying it.

I would recommend reading up on tank cycling as well as DSB (deep sand bed cycling) before adding any more fish or corals to the tank! The start-up of a tank is a slow process but worth it in the long run and if you stick to it, way more economical than rushing and losing livestock.

Welcome to MASA and the hobby.

As I have learned and everyone here will agree this, patience is the name of this game.

    please share some picks.

    Hi

1.I have my on RO system, how do I check to see if the water is suitable RO wTer before I add it to my top up system or mix for my water changes?

    2. I have base rock in my tank, which has been cycling for 8 weeks or so, there are orange and brownish colors on the rock, nothing serious but it's changing. Is this normal with the cycle process?

    3. I added 4.5kgs of live rock today( Kenyan) when should I do another water test so I can sTart adding soft coral?
I already have to clown fish in, they are eating and swimming well.

    4. Lately I am thinking of installing a proflux system to help me monitor my babies when I'm not home, do you think it entirely necessary or could I trust my house keeper to watch over it when I'm away, it quiet expensive.

Thanks to anyone who offers advice..

    1. you use a TDS meter to see, if in jhb can test on mine
    2. yes its normal and they probably sponges
    3. let the tank settle and monitor for the next week or 2 before you do a WC
    4. i dont use them, if this is your first tank i recommend getting your hand dirty and learning the ropes

Ok thanks, I am out in Pretoria, I will go the shop and get a TDS,thanks for the offer.

I Tend to agree I am going to learn the ropes before getting a machine to do it for me.

When you say let the tank settle, does that mean I shouldn't add the soft coral I was hoping to add?

    Hi Wave runner,
Just a suggestion, do try to update your location. In the event of you being away, and you need assistance, people will be better prepared to help if your locality is known.

And If you are sure that your tank have completed it's cycle, (by 7 weeks it should be close to the end now) then just do a final parameter check, and you will find that yo are probably able to add your softie that you are looking forward to adding.

For a relatively cheap bill you should buy the following items that will look after your tank for you while you are away:
    -auto fish food dispenser
-timer for lights, analog plug type if you are doing manual switching on/off
    -Auto top up RO unit
I prefer this approach to letting friends/family/house sitter/servant look after my tank. They always feel sorry for the fish and over feed them or try and fiddle with stuff.
