    Hi all,

I have an old tank of mine back and i am thinking of doing a marine tank. The problem is that i have not worked with fish for 8 years and this will be my first marine tank, as i only had fresh water tanks previously. So the question is "what do i need" and what do i need to research first? The tank is 228 litres (100cm x 60cm x 48cm).

Hope to hear from you soon, thanks alot.

    Pitte.

Hi and Welcome to MASA, do some research and then decide what it is you want, a fish only system or a reef tank with coral and fish. Both have different needs and different price tags.

Hi there Pitte, welcome to MASA. The link that @Tremayn mentioned is in my signature on starting a marine tank - great info for beginners, enjoy :)

I know a guy called "Pitte", we did karate together - is your real name Jaco?

Hi Alan, my goal is to have a reef tank but feel i need to look at a load of factors first eg. i stay 230km from the nearest petshop so things like transporting the coral and fish. I heard that even with a permit it is not wise to get fish from the coast as it can kill everything in your tank, my reason is i stay close to Kozi bay, i hope there is someone that can clear that up for me please. I must say that this forum has been really educational and i would like to thank every one here. Tobes my real name is Peter and what i know of karate is scary

The tank you have, is that a normal tank you used for fresh water?
A tank with overflow and sump area is a lot better and easier to maintain. Not saying it cannot be done, but generally canister filters are not as good in marine setups compared to sumps with DSB or NP-Reactors.

    Anyway

    Welcome.
