Thanks. Haven't got any pics yet & I'm at work so will have to take a few pics tonight. My setup is very basic:Tank 1200x500x450 Sump 1000x350x400. I've put crushed coral in the tank,1 heater & 2 powerheads. Sump has coral fragments in first chamber with hang on skimmer, aragonite in second chamber, tubes in third chamber & return pump in fourth chamber. Setup has been running for nearly 2 weeks. The guy at the petshop gave me 4 mollys to initiate the cycle. Should I be seeing any type of life yet? Any advice would be appreciated.

    First off,
    :welcome6:

I (and others on the forum I believe) would suggest that you remove the crushed coral from your DT, and rather use aragonite (expensive) or play sand (cheaper)

What do you mean by tubes in third chamber?

    Hope this helps;)

    Welcome to MASA.

Using fish to start a cycle is just wrong as the tank will go through an ammonia and nitrite stage that is toxic to fish. So, I don't think you must take the advise of that petshop seriously. Ask us first here on MASA as we have a lot of guys with loads of experience that have no financial gain in helping you, unlike that petshop ;)

BTW, where are you from? I suggest you edit your details in the user CP incase you need help then the guys in that area can offer assistance :(

i found that dorry pets South Africa's largest online marine aquarium pet shop had good prices... MUCH cheaper than the petshops in my area...

if you let people know where you are located, people in your area can give more accurate advice...

there is also a link to the sponsors pages on the masa home page... support those guys... they will support you with advice that will save you buckets!

This is my first attempt. Not happy with the setup. I would like to make improvements.
Going to empty the tank in order to replace crushed coral with fine aragonite.
I'm going to modify the sump so that it has only 3 compartments (skimmer, DSB, return). Going to remove the ceramic tubes and coral fragments.
    Any help would be appreciated.

hi winegums and welcome to masa, great to have you join :)

thats a nice tank to start off with, a few things to chmnage and nows the best time but i am sure that after a while you will get into the swing of things with the tank and salt water :)

I dont know which pet shop you got the tank from and worse the advice ( :( ) but to be frank and blunt i suggest avoiding them like the plague if they give you advice like putting mollies in to start a cycle and to use course coral chips in a sump like that, or to a lesser degree ceramic noodles. The worst is that those mollies are being kept in environments that are not conducie to sustain fish life yet and the practice is unethical and poor at best, i see red when i think of a living thing being harmed due to being in poor conditions.

there are a few changes you could do to the sump as you say and putting in a good skimmer will help the tank alot in the future.

but that tank looks like a good start for now:)

    Thanks for the reply Crispin
I've been waiting for someone to get back to me.I've changed petshops because I realised this guy is just in it for the money. Dealing with Dorry's now.Anyway,I bought fine aragonite for DT,been advised to get playsand for the DSB & I'm looking at maybe a TS1 skimmer. Going to take the poor fish back to the LFS too, this time I will cycle without any! Do you have any advice regarding the compartments in the sump and essentials before trying again?
