    Hi Jacques

I am also very new to marine aquariums. Try reading some of the articles on how to start up a marine aquarium on this forum. I found that they helped me a lot.

    Regards
    Peter

A very WARM WELCOME to MASA, Jacques! Great to have you on board!

Have a read through the URL in my signature, about "Starting a Marine Aquarium".

Also - please ask as many questions as you need to, to ensure that you can be the best reefkeeper/marine aquarist that you CAN be!

Jacques - that is unfortunately difficult to say. It all depends on what type of tank you are looking at getting. You can:
    - DIY build your own tank (+-up to R1000)
    - buy a custom built tank (between +-R300 and R1000)
    - buy a pre-manufactured designer tank (ie. Boyu, JBJ, etc)(between R3500 and R5000)
(this is all for the tank only)...

So - the cost all depends on these.

Then - you have to look at substrate/sand, live rock, synthetic salt and RO water (if you don't live close to the sea), lighting (if your unit does not come with lighting - the Boyu/JBJ units come with built-in lighting), testing kits, filtration (chemical/mechanical), etc....

I think that some people have said that they were able to start off their tanks with +-R5000 to R6000? But, this takes a while though, because you don't need to spend all of that immediately..... As the tank needs to go through it's cycling process first..... Which takes 6 to 8 weeks...
