    Good day

My new tank is about 2 weeks old now, and the water have been circulating and everything, but the last few days, i noticed a brown substance, like rust, formed on the pumps, the Live Rock, and even on the sand. Everything is turning brown in the water. What is this and is it normal? I put in the Live Rock in the first week, as the guy at the shop told me it will speed up the process of the water.

    Thank you

    Rudi

The brown stuff is diatoms and is normal in a cycling tank. will go away in time, and you might have blooms of it in the future as your tank matures. nothing to worry about.

    oh, and welcome!

The rock i bought, is apparently fegi rock or something, i paid like R280 per KG. Those two pieces was like R1200. Then they were all pretty, but now its just brown all over. So you say that will also go away and the rock will look nice again? I am really worried because i spent so much money on that rock. I will upload some more photos of the brown rock now.....

It will definately disappear so don't worry. The rock will be Fiji unless you bought it in a Japanese camera shop.

Its called diatoms. Its nothing to worry about. It looks ugly now but it feeds a lot of critter in the tank, and is part of the cycle process.

How long before it goes away or will it stay there till i get fish? Even the glass in the tank is getting the brown spots on!

it depends on the system - it could be a few days, could be a few weeks. you can try cleaning the glass with a magnetic scraper sold in any pet shop. don't stress, its actually good stuff, will do no harm to your system

The guy at the shot said i must just brush the stuff off the rocks before it stains the rock. and also the glass. Is this normal? I have figi rock in there and paid lik R1200 for 2 pieces if rock so i really dont want to damage it!

No no, just leave and let it be. It's part of the cycle, there is no chance that it could stain the glass(this you can just clean with a wipe or something) and there could be a chance that it could stain the rock BUT after a month or so the pink and everything starts growing again and then it looks better then it did. Just give it patience and time, nothing good happens fast!

PS. how about some pics, would love to see these uge Fiji rocks!
