    Welcome to MASA

    i would advise the following

Sit back and relax, spend time researching on MASA......

come up with what YOU think will work based on your research, post your thoughts on MASA and see what the members have to say .... remember we have nothing to gain from this, pet shops have a vested interest in selling you as much as they can....

And remember in marines there are many ways to skin a cat and even more if you are keen on some DIY

As a newby myself, I would suggest that you read what the members on this forum have to say BEFORE you go out and buy.....
You will find important information here that will save you thousands of rands... no joke...
You are lucky to be in a position where you havent spent all your money on equipment yet and dont have to be stuck with hardware you dont need.
Take the advice, make up your own mind and go get what you really need. Take your time and the rewards will follow.... somone on this forum used some very sage words with me in the beginning and quoted "Only bad things happen quickly in marine keeping" I think it was @RiaanP or @Tobes. Take their advice and enjoy...

Actually, it was JacquesB way in the beginning. Most of us carried on from there :p

Welcome to MASA bbman, glad you joined us. I think you need to read the link on starting a marine tank, below my post. It will help you a lot ;)
Any questions after that, fire away :)

    Hi and WELCOME !!!!!

    1.) Patiance!!
2.)Dont buy anything yet!! Wait,do research, ask the MASA comunity and then
decide.Atleast 10 other members here has bought or did what you wanted to do,so they can give you a good idea and feedback regarding that product ect.
3.) Remember you have a very big tank(1100 liters) So mistakes are going to be very costly! ( like buying the wrong equipment ect.)
4.) And this is solely my opinion! Dont just stick too one brand as there are good and bad products in every range and make.
5.) O did i mention being patiant???Because bad things will happen VERY fast! Trust me on that one.
6.) Fish only system will be a lot cheaper and less maintenance.
7.) look in the members tank section, there is a thread with full tank shots only thread.look through there and see what you like and dont like because you are going too change your mind atleast 1000 within a year from now.
8.) Buy the best skimmer that you can afford!

And read as much as possible.and remember all of us here was/still are noobs and there is no such thing as a dumb question!!!!!

O and lastly 99% of everyone on MASA are pic-o-holics!!
Dont say i didnt warn you LOL

Rather ask first. Some pet shops sell you junk and things you dont need just to make a quick buck, instead of looking at the long term relationship between yourself and the shop.

    still waiting

    hi

my tank is running now for 10 days ... is so frustrating cause i cant do anything or add anything

thus far ... ive only got some live rock in some fijji and kenya and i also added some dead live rock which was cheaper

how long is this cycling period usually ?

how much longer ... waiting patiently for bacteria and algae,

thus far i got a protein skimmer (aqua medic )

and a ocean runner uplift pump (aqua medic )

    and 2 x 12000w power heads

waiting on light ...or saving for lights

if anyone has live rock in cape town for cheap ...let me know

will keep you guys posted ...

So far that sounds cool. I waited 2 months in agony. I found that buying a magnifying glass, a laser light and a tiny white led light in a pen helped too. It made me see every bit of new life that was coming out of the live rock. I knew that tank so well, I would investigate every square millimetre. And every time some new colour or shade appeared I was excited... hehe...

As far as lights are concerned, thats another wait. I was told to not use lights during cycling cause it causes algae blooms. But of course I knew better.... How bad could it get? Its cycling the tank anyway! Surprise!!! Lots of diatoms, green stuff, brown stuff, etc... And some of it is still there.... But, one day you see some purple stuff on your rocks (coralline algae) and you get all excited cause its a sign that all your hard work is paying off. Believe me, the frustrations you endure now, will all reach a payoff later which you will enjoy for many months to come... ;)

its Easy. basicly you just add drop by drop. (shake between every drop) until it turns yellow.

say u added 5 drops and it turns yellow. then your KH is 5

what nori are you feeding? The green or red one and is it the Ocean Nutrition one? You can also try mysis, tangs happily take that and it helps with getting fish to start eating
