Hi Guys, im wanting to get into the hobby again after being away for five years. Has a large full reef in the past but want to go a little more specialized this time (money will only allow this)

I want to go more SPS than anything else and could use advise on lighting ect.

Im looking at a 1200x600x500 LWH with either a 1m or a 1.2m sump, the first chamber will be inlet with skimmer (probably a ts2 or berlin xl) heater second chamber will be huge deap sand bed, third chamber will be uplift pump. The fourth will be a top up tank. I was thinking of also a extra chamber with a refegium.

    Was thinking for lighting 2 x 150w MH and 4 x 900 t5's.

    Any advise would be great.

    Cheers
    Alan

    Hello and welcome back Alan.

Well, your setup will depend on the thickness of your wallet. Also the DIY you do yourself can save a lot of money.

But you want to go for the more expensive setup in my opinion. SPS is more expensive compare to softies. As you need some extra reactors to keep them happy.

Anyway, a successful tank depends heavily on original setup. The better your equipment you start up with, the easier the maintenance will be.

Skimmer, one of the crucial elements. Get the best you can afford.
Lights, For SPS, again get the best you can afford.

They are the most expensive piece of equipment you need. OK, some internal flow pumps are just as expensive (and nice).

Welcome to MASA, IMO your lighting would be fine, remember water flow and quality is as important in a SPS tank as lighting.

My wallet is actually very thin, and I would like to do as much as possible DIY, What the deal on LED lights I see that this is the latest, is it just best to stick to MH and T5's?

LEDS are coming, but just not yet.

Not on SPS and not on deeper tanks.

Soon, they will be on PAR. Another year or two.
