    hi all,

    Just a quick introduction.

I have eventually started a small marine tank (60l) about a year ago. This was after long hesitating and being scared of the work involved with marine tanks only to find its not more work than a planted tank.

Long story short, one year later and my first marine tank is still going strong and looking good. I have learnt a lot in the past year, from all over the net and speaking to people and always find myself reading up stuff this forum so I decided to join to get a little more involved.

I just finished building my 250l tank with a 60l Sump.So far so good. The tank itself is a standard 1220mm x 450mm x 450mm from my lfs. The rest was done myself.

I just filled it last week and now the cycling begins.

This is the worst part for me as i am very impatient.

Below is a picture of the tank so far.

Let me know what you guys think.

    Hello and welcome Martinf

Why so many 50mm pipes in the sump area?

The two on the left are overflow pipes. The other one is on the left tees off the return and was to control the return flow. I originally wanted to only have one overflow and one return but the return was pumping faster than the overflow could handle therefore i had the other pipe. Now that i got 2 overflows i no longer need it and it has been removed. Oh and they 40mm. No idea why i decided for 40mm.

Added the sand today and installed the skimmer. Been runnig for 5 weeks now and the cycling is nearing completion. Live rock (Real Reef) is hopefully coming tomorrow. Thanks to @flappy ( Urban Marines ) for the excellent service and helpfulness.

    hi guys,

So the cycle is complete and added fish on Friday ( 2 chromis ). I did tests on Thursday evening and all was good so i went i bought fish Friday afternoon and added them to the tank. hiding at first then came out. Did tests again on Sunday and still everything looked good.

I got home today and one of them is dead and the ammonia is on 0.004mg/l all other parameters are the same.

    Temp 25°
Salinity 1.025 (gonna slowly raise it to 1.026 )
    pH 8.26
    NH3 0.004
    nitrite 0
    nitrate 5
    Kh 8
    magnesium 1200
    calcium 375

Is there something I am missing here or doing wrong ?

all seems fine for the age of the tank.
Nitrate can come down a bit, but it is of no worries at the moment. You do not have corals.

Can you test your PO4 levels?

Did test for PO4. Will look at it and let you know. Think it might have just been stress as the other one is doing well. They were both not eating either. Now the one is eating.
