    Hi,
I would like to introduce myself as a new member. I am living in Mozambique in a little town called Inhassoro. I am very interested in starting a salt water fish tank. There is legal netting all the way along the beach here so alot of tropical fish are bought in in the nets everyday and are often just left to rot and die on the beach. I would like to become familiar with how to maintain salt water tanks and possibly start a supply chain to south africa for these fish. I would be looking for all the necessary equipment too.
    Looking forward to some replies!!

A VERY WARM WELCOME to MASA, Debbie!
A VERY HONORABLE quest that you want to get into! Good luck with THAT!

BTW: have you started investigating the export permit issues, to get the lifestock OUT of Moz?

Please have a read - you will MOST likely need to acquire or build, quite a few tanks, some decent filtration (you can try an open system, where clean sea water is pumped in every day, IF you are close enough to the sea) system - investigate HUGE ALGAE SCRUBBER tanks (that sits outside), etc....

Good luck - and PLEASE ASK AS MANY QUESTIONS POSSIBLE, that you can make knowledgeable decisions.

Enjoy your journey into marines! It's a life-changing hobby!

    Hi Debbie :)

welcome to MASA, you certainily live in a lovely town :) I was lucky to live in Inhambane for two years before moving up to Quelimane and Guru in zambezia provence. Starting and keeping a marine tank should be fairly easy for you, although get the equioment from SA and drive it down if you can.

there was a real nasty cretin in Inhambane whom was catching and exporting tropical marine reef fish when i was living there but I didliked the death rate and spend a large part of my energy ensuring they were very effectivley closed down. Laws were passed eventually and it might be difficult for you to opperate, however a guy that you could look up is Paul Dutton. He was head of nature conservation in Maputo and was very helpful in getting that opperation closed, and would know what to do. Also speaks perfect english, but he maywell have retired as this was all pre 2000.

you could also try find out if the marine research stations at Villanculous or Inhaca are still running and they maywell be able to help you in the right direction.

You might also look to contact an NGO and see if they can help especially if you are looking to empower local communities with employment and equity in the company, they will help greatly in setting up the required permissions.

but if you live in Moz, you will know the frustrations you are up against and i really think it will be very dificult to get going, or else a long term project at the least.

Start with getting a decent sized tank together, especially if it can be in a public place where you can use it to gather local interest and support, then move the pawns foward in the game of chess.
