    Okay, I got;
    Display tank.1.2m x .45m x .45m +/- 221L
    Sump .90m x .35m x .35m
Pump, I still don’t know what size to get because I don’t want any power heads in my tank I would rather branch the inlet off into 3 for extra water movement.
150gl protein skimmer not sure of the make. (Got it from a friend)
    2 x 54w t5 Lights, 10000k & Blue coral light.
    1 Metal halide 150w 10000k

None of this is connected or running yet, tank is still dry. I’m first focusing on building the wooden cabinet to cover the steel frame.

I have a couple of questions.
1.) I live in Durban, so I don’t see the need to go and spend a LOT of cash for RO and Instant Ocean. Is it acceptable to use real sea water? (Obviously use RO for evaporation top ups.)

2.) Can I use a couple of scoops of sand from the bottom of a tidal pool to seed my DSB.

3.) If I do weekly Real sea water changes do I still need to add supplements?

Not really, but then again depends on your system demand. But you should be more than fine for the first few months anyway until you see the needs for certain inverts and corals

Have a look into closed loop systems (CLS) if you do not want any pumps in your display tank! The pump requirements vary according to the species of corals (if any) that you are wanting to keep.

the return pump unfortumately will not be able to provide the flow in your tank, if it is too big and Tobes said, your filtration will be ineffective

Thanks for the warm welcome:biggrin:. I will evolve slowly, but eventually I want a full reef with Beginner to Intermediate Coral (Soft and Hard) Fish and invertebrates:). I do not want to have hard to keep specimens, as I believe a well-kept Beginner tank is more beautiful than a bad maintained advanced reef with hard to keep corals.

    Thanks, It is by far!

I am looking for a good LFS in Durban, I know of a couple, but it is crazy when I compare their prices to that of web. Nut with postage and the time of delivery it almost seem that I will have to support the local people.

welcome aboard. It all depends on what you plan on keeping otherwise no supplements are necessary and a 25% a month is fine because it works for me.I dont see the need in doing it every week

welcome to masa schalk, great to hear that you are getting into the hobby and planning well :)

have a look through lanzo's tank thread (lanzo can u post the link in here?) as he sdaid its the same size you have and he did it on a really small budget, if you plan right and take your time things are far cheaper than you think :) Id def suggest joining the East Coast Reef club is a very good idea, especially before you start off so that you can maybe see a few other guys tanks and systems, get ideas on sumps and filtration, internal flow and scaping of your tank and then when you start off you will be far better prepared.

    good luck and happy postings:)
