    Hi
    New to both Site and Marine tanks, some help needed please.
    I have a new 115G marine tank with 25G sump/refugium. My problem is tank now cycling nearly 6 weeks and Nitrites/Nitrates still off the charts. Ammonia=0
    I have had Diatom bloom and also some green Algae on some new live rock.
    I do have a Reef Octopus DNW-200 Recirculating Protein Skimmer
    Quest: When and how will Nitrites/Nitrates drop so I can add fish?

    Sometimes it take a long time for the tank to cycle.
    The key is patience and wait, what you could also do is buy a bottle of special blend and dose per instructions.

    Do you do any water changes?
    What are the parameters exactly?

    have you done a water change, if not do a 30% water change then test nitrites/nitrates

    thx for the reply guys
    Nitrites = 1(max reading)
    Nitrates = 2(max Reading)
    Ammonia= 0
    Salinity= 1.023
    Ph=8.2

    Tests done with Red Sea kit for Nitrites/Nitrates/PH/Ammonia and Alk
    I have not done any water changes since starting the cycle. Was told not to do this while the tank was cycling.

    Does anyone know where I can get some sort of marine plant growth for the sump/refugium as I believe this helps absorb nitrates. Have tried all local petshops in Fourways/Randburg area.

    Just post a thread in the wanted section for calupra or cheato. Someone will assist you. They normally give it away free.

    Thought 2 sounded odd
    Who made the rock? That might be leaching nitrates
    Have you added any bacteria to speed up the cycle, like special blend, stability, etc?

    Did you ever do a water change?
    The test kit you got, what is the expiry date on it? Just to be double sure, ask somebody else here close by you to retest some water for you, or your LFS.

    As mentioned, a bacterial start up additive can be used to speed things up a bit.

    I made the rock, had it curing for about 3 months in 3 weekly water changes, then standing in sun for another month before putting into tank. Have not added anything to the tank, wanted to have a balanced and natural cycling

    If theres nothing added, and youve started with artificial rock, then it will take a really long time to cycle. Best would be to add bacteria (microbelift nite-out is good) and add macro algae.
    Is your skimmer pulling out much?

    I agree, add some already cured liverock to speed up the process and get some different bacterial cultures in there.

    Do the nitrate/nitrate test again but dilute your water sample in RO (so half tank water, half RO) to get an idea of what parameters actually are. Being off the chart could mean your nitrates are 51 or 150.
