After 14 months into this hobby, and I am more hooked than ever.

This thread is about the tank I took over from Clinton. It's going to be a mixed reef tank. Mainly to learn about SPS.

I have learned so much and there is much more to learn, especially from experience.

So, what I would like to achieve in this thread is to get the tank to perfection for my next even bigger tank in a few years time.

The tank is 3 months old now. The first thing I had to do was to build a cannopy.

    The tank got 6 x T5's.
    2 coral blue, 2 atinic, 2 10000k

So, the first question is: Is that good enough for SPS?
I am going to fix the reflectors at the end of the month.

Probably good enough for montis, but the more hardcore SPS will probably need an extra tube or 2?

    Looking good though! Great start!

Also, the reflectors will help a lot! Apparently you can get up to 50% more, out of the lights with reflectors!

for sps you will need 8 T5s. I wouldnt go less than that but also depends what globes you use. Jewel makes individual reflectors :)

Thanks for the advice Tremayn. I am trying to get some sps frags for a test run.

I have seen something interesting this week. I mounted reflectors above the globes but the light seemed less because there is a zink roof above the tank.

Thanks Ghaydeen and Leslie. As you can see, I am batteling with pink cotton candy algae. Bought a mexican turbo snail about 2 weeks ago and only seen last night that he is starting to make a dent. Want to buy more now. Heavy at R80 but worth it. Only if I can get some at the LFS because they normally don't survive the trip.

Just learned that the mexican turbo snails won't be comming in for a while, so if anybody in East London got 1 or 2 in there tank and there is no more food for them, I would gladly buy them.

My coraline and green plating monti is bleaching. Started since I began to dose calcium and alkalinity again.
    Tested last night:
    Calcium 400
    Alkalinity 8.0
    Magnesium 1420

I use Reef Advantage Calcium and Baking Soda. I don't dose magnesium as it's included in the Reef Advantage Calcium.
Reef Advantage Calciumâ„¢ also includes magnesium and strontium in amounts proportionate to typical utilization ratios (100:5:0.1, Ca:Mg:Sr).

Is the bleaching because my magnesium is to high? Your advice would be highly appreciated.
