well its a all in one unite i was told. all i had to get is the heater. It has a 3 chambered sump built in.

I also got a ca test kit and no3 test kit and ph kit.
I was told to place the salt in the tank then tap water followed by crushed coral in the bottom, let the tank run for 3 hour's and then place my live rock in the tank. I have done this yesterday.
I also added some more live rock today.
I am flying blind so i don't have a clue.
So any advice would be great

Firstly do you have any idea of the salinity of the saltwater you have made up ?

In future I wouldn't suggest using tapwater,as it has loads of impurities. You need to use Reverse Osmosis water, either from a RO unit or purchase from your LFS (local fish shop)

Your tank needs to run a cycle that means no Livestock for at least 4 weeks.

Here are some links for you to look at:

    Hope this helps

hello tony, welcome to MASA and the light :)

it does indeed sound like you are flying a little blind and those threads thats warr has just posted for you will go a long way to helping you get along.

it sounds like your pet store either doent know that much asbout marines or worse does and is sending you up a creek. either way stick with us here and we will set you right:)

As warr says the specific gravity (SG) is very important, you really need to know what this and if u cant test it, get it tested for u.

What is the vollume of your tank?

tapwater is problomatic as it has too many undersirables in it. Regretably we dont always know what is in tap water so in marines we tend to use reverse osmosis water (RO) which if u have a small tank you can buy from a good pet store, else its a good idea to get one yourself. Try the masa sponsors for equipment if u need.

Crushed coral might also be a problem in the long run as it might trap detrirus. Idealy you need a substrate thats around 1-2mm in diam and not too sharp.Aragonite is my personal choice but many find that well washed reggies play sand it far cheaper and does a good job.

Thats enough bad news for now, the good news is you have come to the right place for help and that you have your first tank going :) thats a start. Listen to us and read lots and you will soon realise what C*%^&$%$ those ppl are telling u! :(

    welcome and happy posting:)

A warm welcome to you!! You have come to the right place for help and guidance.

In my personal experiance please don't listed to the advice you LFS give you.. :nono: Most of them will try and sell you as much stuff as possible and give their advice to make sure they get the most out of you.. Even if it means letting you live stock die so you can go back and buy more.!!

You CAN however strust all our MASA sponsors for advise and guidance as we have trained them well!!

    Tap Water! NO

Who the F... is this pet shop.
Somebody in Cape Town should please enlighten this pet shop. Obviously not a keen marine shop, and definitely not a sponsor.

But how do you fix this LFS views. If he just go with the attitude that it is his bussiness and who the hell are we telling him how to do things, and what and how he should help his customers. I'm afraid it will just be the deaths of many innocent creatures.
