    Hi Everyone
    Great forum

I am a newbie to the marine tank world. I really have NO knowledge at all on how to set up a tank and keep it alive

    My plan:
To start off SLOWLY with a FOWLR tank and in time upgrade to include coral

At the moment I have the following:
    1. Tank 1200 x 600 x 600 with sump tank (will have the dimensions tomorrow)
    2. Tropical fish pump and filter (1200L ph). Can this item be used at all for a marine tank?
    3. Heater

    Questions:
    1. The tank needs to be drilled at the bottom for water to flow to the sump. Who / where can I get this done?
    2. Should the hole be 50mm?
    3. Where do I get a pipe and grommet to feed the water from this hole to the sump?
    4. How many compartments should my sump have? (I'll try post a pic asap)
    5. In terms of hardware to still get: what would I need and where is the best option (quality and price) to purchase (new or used)
    6. The next steps: Modify the tank, fill sump with filtration "elements", fill tank and sump with water, wait for tank to cycle, add LR, wait wait wait and then add fish???

    Thanks for the help guys

Seeing as you are new to the hobby, i would suggest the simple route. i would say 3 chambers with the first beeing the same size as each other but bigger than the last. The reason being is that the last chamber contains the return pump which should be last after all the filtration is done. So the first chamber should have your protein skimmer, heater and if you want to adding additional reactors, which i believe is only really needed if you are going to have a fully stocked tank (with corals and fish, etc). The second chamber should have your natural filtration like most people have (as well as myself) put crushed up LR. Its best to start of easy and then do alot of research and see what more you can add to the tank and how it works and etc.

So today I bought wood, stain and magnets to close of the sump area to keep my 1 year old out, also to make things neater.
I also fitted the 50mm overflow pipe that feeds into the sump. :)
If all goes well then tomorrow ill put the sump in place with the skimmer and return pump. I will then fill the system up with fresh water and run for a day to see if there are any leaks

    Photos to follow

@ DarrenT: yes I am, something that can catch bigger particles before they go through the LR. It was suggested by Shaun from Pet Stop...

Filled my tank with fresh water today to have a "dry" run.

The sump has a leak :(

I have the right silicone to fix it but no clue how to go about it, any ideas?

    Update:
My plans changed quite a bit since I started. My tank has cycled nicely and I've added some corals, hermits, snails, shrimps, clowns, chromis.

@ Mods: could you guys please move this topic to the right section? Not FOWLR, now its going full reef :)

Question I have: what is the ideal water level ABOVE a dsb? Keep in mind I have some LR on top of the sand and some cheato...

    Thanks
    Frank

    Hi
The ones I used are the ones that are used for name plates on a shirt etc. So there are 2 parts to it, the front and the back plate. I didnt use the back plate, only the front which holds on to the tank stand
battling to upload a pic via tapatalk :(

@Bendor: my tank is finally starting to settle in. My biggest challenge to date was fighting ws :(. Lost a good couple of fish as a result.

    My fish:
    - convict tang (he rules the tank)
    - rabbit fish
    - yellow tang (he challenges the convict every opportunity he gets)
    - red tooth trigger
    - 2x fire gobies
    - acanthurus dussumieri tang
    - cleaner wrasse
    - banana wrasse
    - percular clown

    Inverts:
    - 2x cleaner shrimps
    - fire shrimp
    - many snails
    - many hermit crabs
    - multi colour urchin
    - diadema urchin
    - cushion stars

    Corals:
    - hammer
    - torch
    - leather
    - zoa's (green and orange)
    - pulsing xenia
    - mushrooms (many colours)

    My newest addition:
    - anemone (not sure the exact species)

I'll try load some photos but my corals are mostly frags or still small.
