    Hey Everyone,

So I am I am in the market for a new DSLR camera. My 500mm lens decided to pack up on the weekend at the Kruger. Luckily it was at the end of the trip. I've currently got the Sony Alpha-100. Only reason I got this camera was I had the lenses for the older minolta cameras and they were a direct fit on the Sony. Since I'm going to need to buy a new lens I thought I might as well upgrade the camera at the same time. It seems Canon is the most popular brand with lenses easily available. The camera will be mainly used for wild life pictures.

I initially was going to got for the Canon 1100D (Entry level camera). The deal was R4000 with the kit lens, case and storage card.

I then came across this deal, what does everyone think. Is it a good deal?

    Canon 550D birthday bundle (Makro)

    Bundle Includes:

    550D Body
    18-55mm IS lens
    55-300mm DC lens
    16GB Card
    Camera Bag

    Price: R6599

Firstly, I am no pro so take what you want from this but personally, I don't think you can go wrong with the 550D - I've got the exact camera and I couldn't be more happier with the snaps I get from it.. took it to Thailand and Europe and it was at my side the entire time. Well worth the price at the time.

And jeeeeeez has the price gone down - I paid just over R8000 for mine and it didn't come with the 55 - 300mm lens or an SD Card.

It sounds like a really good deal because all the other places on the net want at least R8999 for the same deal. Hope Makro hasn't made a mistake and I get disappointed when I go to buy it tomorrow.

Just hope the other lens also has the IS feature.

I'm a Nikon fan but I think they are much of a muchness and at that price grab it with both hands and run.

The 550D is a nice camera. But that lens they are advertising does not exist. The lens in that photo looks like the 75-300mm. But its a cheap and nasty to be honest. It does not have image stabalisation and also not a ultrasonic motor which makes focusing slower. You can get that lens on its own for R1700.

If you can stretch the budget then maybe look at ORMS. They have a 600D with 3 lenses, a bag and memory card for just under R9000. the lenses are the 18-55mm IS, the 55-250 IS and the 50mm F1.8.

That website looks so dodge... but maybe that's why they're affordable. Saving money on the website so that they can sell their goods cheap.

kameraz has a fairly good deal on the Nikon D3100 which is similar to the 550D. The lenses is comes with are better in my opinion as they both have image stabilization.

    D3100 + 18-55MM VR + 55-200MM VR LENS KIT R7,030.00 incl. 14% VAT

I am a Canon man myself but if that is the 75-300 lens it is pretty mediocre at best.

I have the 450D and love it. The 550D will be an awesome camera if the 450 is anything to go by.

Not sure about the 55 300 lens i have 55 250and it works well. Look at getting a macro lens at a later stage as well.

I vote for second hand 60D with second hand 15-85 or 17-55...

Have a look at the Nikon D5100 with the 17-55 and 55-200mm combo it's an awesome starter combo with good lenses.

Get the body alone and lenses seprately... These cheap lenses is nice to have in the beginning but they will be collecting dust as soon as you get a decent lens. Better quality walk around lenses (ef-s) is the 17-55 f2.8 and the 15-85 f3.5-5.6 both with IS and USM. And try to go to a store and test the 600d and the 60d.

Dont forget the nifty 50 , 50mm fixed 1.8 lens. Really amazing lens for R1000. Spend 2k on your body and 8k on lenses instead of the other way around.
