negative effects of magnesium being too high?

    i would like to know the negative effects of magnesium being too high in a reef tank

    Define to high?
    I have used raising my Mg to 1600ppm to combat algea.

    i think my reef colours d might have magnesium in it but im not sure

    Thats seriouly high. You must have been dosing ALOT to get it that high. Apparently molluscs arent fans of high magnesium
    What are your other parameters doing?

    I raised mine to 1900 without any issues. And I kept it there for months.

    I keep mine at 1850 to 1900 all the time to ensure i dont get GHA or cyno
    But 2400 sounds a bit wrong

    11.4 and calcium is 450

    snails would be first to die at extended high mag levels

    there are a few threads from RHF on it and worst case is that snails, especially stomatella snails might die, as 459b pointed out

    i have a 20 l bucket of saltwater heating and mixing at home at the moment. when i get home i am going to do a waterchange to reduce magnesium

    I had mine too in that region and nothing happened my algae stopped but did not dissappear...

    well ive done a water change of approx thirty five percwnt and i will test tomorrow. hopefully it will come down to about 1600 ppm

    Do you have any links where it discusses the effect of higher magnesium levels on cyano? Very interested in this.

    wont really afect cyano cos it is a bacteria nor an algae
