Have you got the starter for the ballast?

Definitely looks like a magnetic ballast, which requires an ignitor or starter (and a capacitor I think).

even searched on the net its def a magnetic ballast and does not require a starter or cap but has same diagram which i do not understand. from the little i do i think live goes into the 220v n goes directly to the light then from the light back to the ballast where it says lamp. does this sound right ??

I'm not so sure about that, you need to double check that, if you look at the pic below, the 2 items I have arrowed on the wiring diagram, one must be an ignitor and one is a capacitor.

Ok figured it out, see below

It a multiple voltage ballast and IS magnetic, here how to connect it up

You only use two connection on the unit, and as we live in SA, our voltage is 220, so that is connection 1 (as per pic) and the other is the lamp, connection 4, the others are not used.

Connect 1 to the LIVE of the AC MAINS and 4 connects to "D" on the igniter, LA of the igniter connects to the one side of the lamp, Neutral of the AC MAINS connects to the other side of the lamp, it also connects to the "N" of the igniter. hope this makes sense.:p

Perhaps you can help me :p Is there a need for the capacitor, what does it do? My Metal halides have both an ignitor and a capacitor yet the diagrams above do not.
