Found this little chap crawling around in my tank this afternoon. He was obviously eating the body of one of my lyretails which bought the farm and probably the only reason why he was out during the day. Anyways I manged to catch him and wanted to know firstly what kind of crab is he and secondly might he be harmful to my fish or corals in my tank. Could he be the reason possibly why the fish was dead in the first place? Could there be more?

    Thanks

He's tiny! But his body shape looks like a xanthid - quite a few baddies in this group. good luck with an ID. Claws look rounded at the tips - which is a good sign. But if he was snacking on meat than probably a good idea to gooi him.

Actually, unless you have a seperate pico tank to keep him. Definitely euthanise by sticking him in the freezer. Or sump him.

I have the exact same crab in my sump! But have no idea what type of crab it is except that it's most likely of the Xanthid species.

When I did my research the closest ID I could come to was Atergatis Floridus Xanthidae.

If it is the same one then eating it is ill-advised since it contains paralytic shellfish toxins
