Dont do waterchanges yet, let the cycle finish, the dieoff is usual in the beginning. How long has it been cycling for? Once ammonia and nitrite levels are O then you can start doing waterchanges.

My 4ft tank has been going since 19 December and I've never done a water change yet.... and it doesnt need one either as yet... Corals are thriving, fish healthy etc....
Just RO top up every day.... (until I complete building my RO Top up unit.) ;)

Thge whole point of cycling a tank is to get your bacteria population going. To get your bacteria going you need nutrients, which at this point generally come from organisms dying off and decomposing. Some people say you shouldn't do water changes while cycling and some say you should. I have cycled two tanks and to be honest I did do water changes on both. This varied from 50% to 25% every one to two weeks. The plan was to do them every week but I was using NSW and it rained some weekends so I coudn't always get water. In my opinion if you have massive die off and your ammonia/nitrites/nitrates are sky high this places organisms that may survive the cycle in jeopardy, for me it was a case of do water changes or lose some of the critters I wanted to keep. The bacteria population will still build up but possibly at a slower rate.

I wouldn't clean the rocks. They give an indication of whats happening in the tank and should eventually keep themselves relatively clean. Also by cleaning the rocks you kill more of the critters you want which releases more nutrients into the water column and puts you back to square one.

I hope that answers your questions. Good luck!

Sorry, I thought it was in RO water only, you could just use NSW dude... that also adds alot of nutrientsto the water...
