    Hi All,

I'm new to marine, bought a 9gallon Nano in December, started cycling it beginning of Jan and then it started leaking a week ago :p so I've bought a new Boyu TL450 and that's in the 1st week of its cycle.

    So yeah...nano n00b :)

To throw you into the deep end here: What are your plans on nutrient export and filtration in the nano tank? ;)

PS: We love photos, so please post!!!

    Hi Jaco :)

Well I started cycling this tank on Thursday. I'm just starting to see some coraline on the LR (it had been in the old tank for about a month already) but more algae than coraline. I think i'll shall be popping into the LFS in a bit to get some phosphate remover, that'll help with the algae as I think it'll be better cycling with the lights on than off. I cycled my last tank with the lights off and got nowhere fast. After 3 weeks I was just starting to see a raise in the ammonia levels. With the new tank, so far so good, I checked the ammonia levels and they were climbing (cant remember the figures tbh).

Filteration. Hmm its a difficult one. The bioballs must come out but i'm a bit loath to take out the sponge filter just yet. 1st prize is take out the ceramics and replace with LR but that can only happen next month, once I buy more LR for the display (I moved from 9g (6kgs of LR) to a 12g so I should probs buy another 3kgs, maybe another 1kg for the sump). Then I should be set :)

Circulation wise, the stock Boyu pump should be fine (its 1200lph) and I have a Seio 320 and another an Aquaone 102 (500lph) behind the LR in the display. My biggest problem is light and heat, ive put computer fans in the feeding flap but lost about 4litres in day to evaporation (no kidding) so thats not a solution. Currently the tank is hovering at around 26 - 28 which is fine, but sometimes itll climb to 30 !!! So its either a chiller or bust. Lighting on the Boyu is a bit too relaxed at 36watts for 12g, my old nano was 48 for 9g !!! I may need to somehow figure out how to mod that a bit later.

My next buy is an RO unit though (if I ever get a credit on the leaking Nano). Oh and I only intend on doing anything with the tank is once i've moved house, thatll be in around 2 months time, so patience is my middle name :p

I'll send pics once I take them. Nothing exist without pictures ;)

Thanks Jaquesb !!! But I have 3 books to get through 1st :)

I must be honest, lack of information on this hobby is not the issue, it's more a matter of too much info/opinions and trying to decide what is right or wrong :whistling:

Fly* - I always believe in the following: ask as many questions as you can, get as many "opinions" as you can, and then use your own logic to make up your own mind (then at least you can make an informed decision)....

Hi Fly* - yes. That should be 100% fine. Just monitor the coloration of the elimi-phos. Once the coloration change to brown, then the elimi-phos is exhausted.

    Okie dokie...Here's some pics.

Before I get nailed for my powerehads being in teh wrong place :) i'm trying to figure out how to get the best flow here. I have a AquaOne 500lph PH in th bottomish left corner blowing from left to right behind the live rock, straight above that I have the std Buyo return pump (which I think they have upgraded since its 1200lph) blowing across the top of the tank (also from left to right) and then on the right middle of the tank I have the Seio 320 (which in my opinion is pretty useless since hardly anything comes out) blowing from the back to the front. The tank is a Buyo TL450 which makes it a 58L.

The fans at the top by the feeder lid is a mod I made for my old Nano and by pure luck fitted the Boyu perfectly. They work like a charm (I dont really want to drill holes in my brand new Nano so for now they stay portable) but I lose a tonne of water every day down to evaporation. How are other members getting round the heat issue ??? my tank was sitting at 34 when I got home this afternoon, granted it was in a close droom with the windows barely open but still...thats not acceptable.

    Anyways here's the pics :)

This tank is about a week into its cycle, so it still has a looooooooooong way to go ...I'm moving end of Feb so I'll only start looking at anything probably a month after that. The longer it take the better tbh.

So let me have it... :p how can I get better flow in the tank et al ???
