Hi all need some advise on this
I have setup a small nano with some basic stock
I wanted to know what guys are using as filtration for these tanks
I cannot introduce a sump and so not sure what to do
At the moment the tank is running with an aqua clear Filter with carbon, ceramic rings and filter floss

I have searched high and low for a skimmer that will fit but this doesn't seem possible unless I do some mods
Also If I put in a skimmer I have no space for other filtration
What is the most important filtration

There seems to be no slimmer that will work so are they necessary ?

Try marco-aqua NS16 nano skimmer :) Try add some amonia stones to the mix and maybe a place for some biocubes then you should be sorted;)

One of he most important elements of the filtration is the LR in the tank. Use very porous rock to give the bacteria loads of space to colonise.
The current HOB filter with filter media will mostly just polish the tank water.
You can also look into a nano HOB skimmer. One of the sponsors shoul be able to help you out.
With a nano you have to do regular water changes (depending on what stock you have in the tank), I would say 30% to 40% per week. And you cannot skip a water change.

    Thanks guys
Stacked the tank with about 3 kg of Fiji blue
Also dosing prodibio bio digest to assist with bacteria
I am really limited with space , so I either find a small hob skimmer , but then will have no space for anything else , or scrap the skimmer and rely on the standard filtration and do regular water changes

The skimmer will not reduce the number of water changes that you will have to do, what is the volume of the tank.

In the aqua clear, remove the rings and put in some purigen, some phosban and maybe some matrix. This will enhance your filtration. Then add some macros to your DT.

    Ensure you do Weekly WC

I think above all you should try and get a small HOB skimmer. together with the live rock and a regular water change its all you need. if you still want to add extra filtration like activated carbon, ceramic rings etc. add a small canister filter like Dane G suggested which won't be attached directly to the tank thus saving you a lot of space.

@DeanT - why don't you post some pics of your nano.
A small canister filter would be ideal, an might have more space for filter media than the HOB that you are using at the moment. Just remember to clean it often.

DeanT, if it is a trade off between filtration and a skimmer (of course first prize is both) I would go filtration with phos media, bio cubes & carbon, assuming you keep livestock to minimum and feed carefully, and of course, religous water changes. Another alternative, as the aquaclear van be easily removed, is to do filtration during the day and swop for skimming at night with HOB skimmer?
