Hi everyone, have decided to start a thread on my Boyu TL550.
This tank has been running under my care for about 3months now, but tank is a bit more mature than that as it was running for a long time at previous owner and i took it over with the sand/water/rock/everything.

    Tank : Boyu TL550
    Skimmer : Reef Octo BH1000
Other filtration : filter sponge / Purigen / Phosguard
a second 700l/h return pum p added by precious owner
    Water Flow : 2 x 3000l/h SunSun
Lighting : 1 x 150W Metal Halide and one blue Led strip(the el cheapo one)

Substrate : very fine white aragonite
    about 15kg Mixed LR

    CUC : 2 x hermit crabs , 3 x snails
    Fish : 2 x clown fish , 1 x Bi-Colour Blenny
    Other LS : 1 x cleaner shrimp, 1 x anemone shrimp, 1 x anemone crab

    Coral :
    2 x frogspawn
    various mushrooms
    1 x Galaxy coral
    Grreen star Polyps
    brown Star Polyps
    Pulsing Xenia
    1 x Plate Coral
    2 x Ricordea

Coral i would love to stiall add :
    a bubble coral
    more ricordea
    long tentacle Torch
    and a few others

1 x sand anemone(corkscrew anemone) - I would have likeed to wait a bit longer before adding an anemone into my system but this one, i did not buy, it was bought by a friend of mine and after 3 days he rocked up at my place with the anemone in a bucket and it was looking terrible, so i put it in the tank, and it has recovered very nicely, it opens up beautifully, eats well, etc. it is however fairly big when it really spreads open, so going to give him to another buddy who has a nice big and very mature tank.

I unfortunately was busy last night and did not take the pics meant for this thread, so for now i will add the pics i have here on my pc, will take updated pisc tonight and post em tomorrow morning.

how many fish can one safely keep in this tank? i already have 3, dont want to overdo it as i prefer coral, but just need to know whats the max so i dont eventually go overboard.

Guys a little advice/guidance needed please, would you say i have too much rock in there? or that the rock is too tightly stacked?
and the light, That wooden stand is a temporary thing to lift the MH a bit, is that high enough though? what would be the ideal height above the water level fo the metal Halide?

look at bottom left corner of tank, the purple mushrooms just below the 2 big greens ones, these purple mushrooms never really open up nicely, everything else opens up beautifully, its just these mushrooms that neevr really look too happy.

    Thanks everyone

    Looking good....

I have had 9 fish in mine on the standard skimmer (WG 310)....and all was well. But, I would recomend you give the guys some swim space....dont add to many....it might be all good and well, but even peacfull fish can get cranky without enough space....

    Keep up the good work!

Purple shrooms could maybe not like being so close to the big green ones?? Try moving them to a different location....

the purple mushrooms is on the same rock as thr green ones, so cant really move them unless i cut em off or try to break te rock.
Thing is, i got the rock like that from another masa member and in his tank, the green and the purple mushrooms were both looking fantastic, i have other mushrooms in my tank that are doing very well, just there purple buggers that seem unhappy

9fish, wow, im not too big on fish, love the coral more, one fish i would love though is a pygmy flame angel, not sure if its ok to keep one in a tank this small though

    Thank you Jacques, appreciate it
yo Bollie, lol, yeah have been loving it hey, and to think, when i came to you that day, i didnt really have much interetst in marine, wife wanted clown fish, now look.

its a 14k bulb in the light unit, got the bulb with the light unit and it was fairly new so left it.
Mh switches on at 15:00 and switches off at 21:00 , sound ok?
plan is to get rid of that wooden stand and hang the MH unit, but dont know how high the light should be from the water surface, any ideas guys?

you have the same skimmer on your boyu dont you? love it, works so well.

only other issue is those 2 BIG UGLY sunsun pumps, just dont have bucks for thee MP10, lol

yeah 14k perfect for growth and bit of colour

mh i would run a midday cycle.... 12-2pm ,use it maily for a midday sun/growth period

run blue from 7am-9am---than add white..halide 12-2pm...white off @7pm and blues off @9pm

in this way you shud achieve a replication of sunrise to sunset and proven is that the more you replicate natural occurances the more you corals health accelerates

and ofcourse it will be easier on the pocket regarding elec expense

    love the 14K
sounds awesome, but impossible for me to achieve that with just my one MH and the blue LED Strip.
need to add a decent 'white' light do create the sunrise/sunset effect, i am getting some algae on glass which i clean off weekly, this is maybe because the MH is on too long.

if i may.... if u nt too worried bout elec usage of halide then get a 20k bulb...it will offer the best of both with good colour and growth, then you may run blue led on 7am-9am and 7pm-9pm ....rest of day 9am-7pm u can run halide, and also the 20k will allow less algae problems:thumbup:
