Some more help please - my new tank (been running for about 6 weeks now) has a TS1 skimmer, which is working great, but the micro bubbles it puts into the display is millions.

    Sump is

    • Chamber 1 - over flow with skimmer (water flows over into chamber 2)
    • Chamber 2 - filter matt on ceramic rings (flow is under to chamber 3)
    • Chamber 3 - small chamber, nothing in it (flows over to chamber 4)
    • Chamber 4 - phospahet reactor & return pump
If I switch off the skimmer, 90% of micro bubbles disappear - so how does one fix this?

    Thanks in advance

firstly you need to figure where from the skimmer the micro bubbles are exiting. if its via the exit flow then course sponge will help, even if you have to increase the amount slightly.

do the bubbles move IN the water of the sump or along the surface?

It could also be that the return pump is too fast for the size sump you have, effectivley sucking the bubbles along in the water collum without them being able to escape to surface. You could test that by putting a ball valve into the return line and chocking the flow back slightly.

lastly are you CERTAIN the micro's come from the skimmer and not a slight leak in the return line plumbing sucking air in?

You can add a higher narrow baffle after the first chamber 1 inch off the bottom, forcing the water to under, I think thats how you do a bubble trap

Is this the same tank you originally had the issue on. Two reason for the bubbles escaping from the skimmer is the flow through the skimmers is to high and thus escaping from the skimmer out let. There are a few way to sort this out.
    1) reduce flow of water into the skimmer... if you reduce the size of the skimmer pumps inlet this will reduce water flow of the pump and increase the airflow into the skimmer allowing the bubbles greater chance to rise & longer contact time
    2) increase the air intake of the skimmer with a small air pump this needs fine tuning but the effect the same as the above less water more air. Greater contact time
    3) Possibly putting filter wool in the second chamber on top of filter matt to trap the micro bubbles.

    Dude,

I tried looking at your systems to see if I could have a look at the sump layout in detail, but the only one I could find, I cant see enough detail... this is to say... can you include a picture?

    otherwise...

baffles, baffles, baffles, baffles, baffles! :whistling:

Will take some & post a pic - thanks for that (my sump is small, so think return pump is too strong & only one baffle )

I have the same skimmer and it never happened but i added a 45 elbow which will raise the bubbles preventing it from getting close to the outlet of the skimmer as well as creating a more circular motion in the skimmer chamber. This also improves the skimmer performance. Mine produces almost double the skimmate since the elbow. This is also a good way to increase performance as the enkamat upgrade IMO isnt that reliable. The impeller was engineered that way and adding enkemat throws out the balance because you'll never know whether the weight is distibuted evenly and this will reduce the pumps lifespan
