600 x 600 is a nice size for one metal halide unit, but unless you're going to keep some very light intensive corals i would go for 4-6 T5s preferable in 2ft a fitting, look at dorypets etc other sponsors for prices I dont think they'll be to bad. 500 Deap is not very deap at all t5s will work well, however why not make the tank 6 x 6 x 6

well i wanted an anemone but i want to be able to upgrade to almost anything without having to upgrade lighting, i chose 500mm hight because anything above that the glass has to be 10mm and the price then almost doubles.another problem is that the lights do need to make as little heat as possible with as much light as possible as im on a budget. my dad owns a building company and knows a few people in the light industry so i can get hold of virtually any light thats available in SA. thanx for all replies

There is a building company that does Mhs lights they do a MH unit for about 1400 called reeflite. Maybe you can ge a discount globe will then cost around 700/1100. Put this about 20cm from the surface and you'll have no heat problems. It a single ended MH unit.

Small computer fans are as cheap as chips and can help with cooling although like Trad says a metal halide 20cm above the water's surface wont cause major heat problems. Go for a combo of MH and T5's, where the T5's will be used for sunrise/sunset effect and so that you can maintain a 12 hour photoperiod without the halides being on for all that time.
