    Hi everyone.
I've took on this hobby about a year ago. Have been trying to educate myself but made a few costly mistakes and trusted the LPS way too much. I need some (ok quite a bit) of advise from ppl who actually have marine tanks. :whistling:

I currently have a 270l with no sump, no skimmer, just a canister filter.
Got ceramic rings, carbon, phosphate media and some purigen in the canister.
Lighting : upgraded my t5s to 2x 150w 14k mh, two moonlight led downlighters and one zoo med coral sea actinic.
    2x boyo wavemakers, 1x seiso m620

    lifestock:
2x yellowbellied danzels, bicoloured blennie, 1x common clown , flame gobie
1x sun coral, open brain, 2x leathers, varies polips and shrooms and 3 featherdusters.

I cant seem to get my nitrates down. (i know it's high but i'm having trouble getting the exact reading from my redsea test lab).

I'm using crushed coral as substrate (almost suger fine).
Wanted to deepen the substrate but made the mistake of adding too much and i upset the whole thing.
I had an outbreak of diatomes (i think , didn't look like chyno) about two weeks ago.
I'm concerned cause my leathers aren't opening for the past week. I asume it's my water parameters more then the new MH ? have spotted purple/red aglae in some of the bio rock since i get the mh.
To be honest, i don't know my phos or magnesium.
    sg : 10230
i feed one block of brine shrinp (small blocks , about 10x10x20).
I'm wanting to upgrade my filteration. any thoughts ?

oh -yes.. and i've got a plate coral and candycane which have been on lifesupport for about 8 months (thanks to my first 50l tank with crappy lighting) was hoping the mh's will help them. Plate seems to be improving.

Hi there and enjoy, from my brief stay thus far I have found that you really need to do your research, don't just take action because one reefer says that this is what needs to be done. Each of us will have our own opinion based on his/her experience, but the final choice is best made by weighing up a lot of data that you have researched and then make a decision. The guys on here are great, and you will find a lot of real good advice that you will start to see in the treads, the same advice will be given for common problems. Enough said, ask those questions, also google info that you need.

    hi prodigy.

I was thinking along the lines of adding a sump/skimmer but since i don't have a hole in my tank i'll have to go with the diy overflow idea. Just one thing though... i'm allergic to the toilet sound since my tanks right next to my bed !

How often do you feed the brine shrimp? Do you defrost it and rinse of with water.
What water do you use RO?

Substrate crashed coral is not the best to use try and get play sand from regies you will have to wash it allot before use, or arrigonite if u can afford it.

In the canister filter there is ceramic rings and bio balls this causes nitrate.

When you have the sump ready only use LR with skimmer in first compartment, then a DSB in second compartment and return in last compartment.

Remember when building the sump if power fails you must have enough space for water to shipen back to sump.
