I bought YusiG's spare Boyu and plan on creating a new softy reef setup.

However I need some help, information and advice!

First - how do I get rid of the "white stuff" on the glass.
Tried a razor blade and I might get it off by around Christmass if I have a go at it daily!

Second thing that is different from my Boyu is the "overflow" which is not just at the top, but all the way around the side. Is this normal? I assume an earlier model? Anything I should take note of?

Then the skimmer is also different (smaller) from my other Boyu

I'm not sure exactly how to fit it. My other Boyu has a hole for the skimmer outlet to rest in. This Boyu doesn't.

I tried it two different ways:

Here the pipe goes over the top to the next divider - however the skimmer seems skew now and not "comfortable"

Here the skimmer seems to rest comfortable, but the outlet is in the same chamber.

Would really appreciate all the help I can get!

PS. Anyone have some excess liverock in Cape Town?

Also - I'm missing the power adapter for the UV. If anyone has a spare or unwanted on. I'd be happy to negotiate with you!

Geez that is the 1st models of 550...i tried that 308 skimmer in a 450 and its not good at all...The white stuff would be dead coralline and is not easy to get off...but i will keep an eye on the thread..Good luck with it...

Ok - what skimmer model comes with the latest Boyu 550?
    On ebay I found :
    WG 308 (120l/h)
    WG 310 (150 l/h)
    WG 201 (120l/h)
    WG 428 (200l)

Should I upgrade to a better skimmer?
    Suggestions most welcome!

If memory serves me correct its the 428..u will notice the new models 'sump area' are also bigger to accommodate the bigger skimmer...U have a newer version so u sould be able to compare it...If i was u i will upgrade the skimmer as my experience with the 308 is not good...it just does not really work well...Only problem is the 428 will not fit in ur chamber hence the mod they made to make the chambers bigger...Other options would be tunze skimmer or HOB skimmer...
Oh and vinegar sould work great...Forgot to mention it...Soak it in the vinegar for a hour or so...sould come off easy then...Good luck...

Thanks - I'll probably upgrade to the 310 in the meanwhile ...

If that doesn't work I'll rethink the plans.
PS Do you know anywhere in Cape Town that is a good place to look for spares / upgrades for the 550?

Never realised there is such a difference between the 550's! (Maybe they should have been 550, 551, 552, etc!)

following with interest as i also have a tl 550. i would close off the extra openings in tank and just have the overflow sectoon on top as this helps to skom surface of water where most impurities lie.

Thanks - given this is how the newer Boyu's look, they probably realised the same thing!

Any suggestions on what I could use to close those gaps lower down?

i am sure i have some thin firm black plastic in the garage. let me scratch some out for you to stick over openings from inside filter area with gel superglue. that way if you choose to remove them at a later stafe u can.

I'll probably keep it - and I might shift the hood of my first (newer) tank, to the second (older) tank.

I like the black hood more!
