    Good morning,

As some of you read in zak's threat about the np pellets I have a big GHA issue.
    Just for a bit of history;
When I started the new system I used my old LR wich where in my old tank for two years.
I used new salt water and bought new aragonite and added my old aragonite aswell.
I cleaned it with jik and rinsed it out for a month until there was now more smell and then added it.
I started my tank up in december 2011 and by january started getting GHA and it was bad.
I thought it was due to me adding fish in too fast but it did not stop.

I had the following filter system on: DSB, NP pellets and phosphate remover.

What I did to try and stop the GHA:
1, I used phosphate En and phosphate remover.
    2, Did big water changes
3, We then thought it was the LR leaching and removed it in march and it is still curing( PO4 is 0 and nitrate is 10, i used salifert)
4, Read up on NP pellets and removed my DSB ( the bottom of the sand was cleaner than the top, which for for me means it was not working)
    5, Added microlift special blend
6, Now using GFO(inserted the weekend) and Phosphate E

I still have GHA like mad and its more on the aragonite than the LR.
Do you think it might be the aragonite that is leaching and if I want remove it how do I do it?

I had the same issue - it was also way more on the arragonite than rocks....I bought the carib sea arragonite.

I used Phospaht-E from brightwell.....and is slowly started dying.....I also removed as much as possible by hand. I now run a reactor with Phosguard.....and it is keeping things under control.....

What i noticed about my aragonite - when you look and the pieces, there are some slightly pink pieces between the white pieces - my algae seemed to have only been growing on these pink pieces.....weird....

    Hi

No, i kept it - went through the suffering of seeing the tank with all the algae. Like I said - the phospaht-E will kill them off....as I pulled some out by hand, I also managed to rmove some of those pink pieces......

Ok, so after taking my arragonite out I wanted to keep it and clean it.
I've put it in the black frum not realising what I did. The drun is smaller than the tank so my sand in there was about 15 cm deep.
Wanted to do a water change on it and when I sturedd it, the sand on the bottum was blackish with a sulpher smell.

So I gues I must chuck it away now?

nope, you can "wash" it in pool acid, then soak and rinse in RO water a few times.

be careful with acid! or even use bleach

    Thanks Dallas

The thing is I have to leave it for 4 weeks so must I let it dry or keep it in the salt water?

let it run in a bucket or tub as a system. It will cycle and sort itself out over time. Rather let it be for 2 months.
Or I take it over :whistling:

Ok, I took my sand out on the 12th of may and cept the lights off, I left a little bit of GHA on the one rock.
I had a look at the rock and could not see any left on there.

Tested the water and phos is 0, nitrate is 0.2.
I'm going to keep the lights off for another 2 weeks just to be safe that the algea will not come back.

    Hey,

After taking most LR out and cured for a month, I took a piece that was in the tank with GHA in the bin and after a week all algae was gone and parameters where in check. I added the LR in the tank after removing the aragonite and there were no light for a month and also no GHA. The light has been on for 3 weeks now and I have some GHA again but very short, I think its me over feeding and the light was getting old.

I changed 4 of the 8 T5's so next month the other 4 and I will feed less at a time and see whats happening.

Cool, that's good news. What did you do with all of your livestock during this period? Or was it fish only?
