    Hi there guys

Havent actually started a thread on my tank yet so I thought let me give it a bash. A few things about my tank. I bought a Sun Sun back in 2010. Second week of November to be exact from a LFS which I have never been back to sadly.

    Tank Dimensions.....1020W x 410D x 650H.

    Tank Volume.....+- 210 litres.

Filtration.....1 x Gutter Filter (Bio Balls, Carbon, Filter Wool).
    1 x Cannister Filter (Dophin C-1300).
1 x Internal Filter (Carbon, Filter Wool).

    Skimmer.....Dymax XP-30.

    Livestock Fish.....3 x Blue Cromus.
    2 x Bhangai Cardinals.
    2 x Common Clowns.
    1 x Dorrey Tang.
    1 x Mandarin.
    1 x Six-Striped Wrasse.
    1 x Sand-Shifter Goby (Large Mouth).

    Livestock Clean-up Crew.....2 x Cleaner Shrimp.
    1 x Tiger Pistol Shrimp.
1 x Blue Legged Hermit Crab.
1 x Orange Legged Hermit Crab.
3 x Various LR Crabs (That I know of).

    Livestock Corals.....To be updated.

Long story short I bought a freshwater tank and my beginning was a rocky one. Lost a few living creatures because of my lack of knowledge which I now regret. From where I started to where I am now is two different places though. My tank has settled and matured nicely to a point where Kenyan tree offcuts given to me free by my regular LFS (because they look like they are going to die) flourish and is growing like a weed now.

Before one of the corals I lost, a Kenyan tree just shriveled up and died in my new water. Honestly I introduced it into my tank after a mere 2 and a half months.

One tip I can give any new people to this hobby is patience. It will serve you well in this hobby. Below are some pics of photos I took a few months in from starting to where I am today.

I must admit as well that I see my tank as my sump in all honesty. I do not have a sump so I make do with a cannister filter and a gutter filter and thus why I say my ST is actually my sump.

Benifits of having a sump. You dont see all the heaters etc...

    Six Corals on one LR.

Otherwise I love my tank and watching it grow as the time slowly passes. Considering the flat which my Wife and I stay this tank was a perfect buy. Not too noisy or messy. Was a mission to get going but now that its pretty much looking after itself I am a happy Man.

Thanks for taking the time to look at a brief summary of my tank.

yes in essence the DT is actually a biological filter in itself.. aerobic bacteria is indiscriminant as to where it colonises so every bit of surface area is a possible point contributing to filtration..

a sump is nice to have because it promotes surface skimming into an overflow.. and generally allows a bigger skimmer to be fitted to the system.. it is also a good area to link other filtration to the system without cluttering the DT.. it too needs to be cared for and cleaned to keep it at peak performance..

your system looks good from what i can see.. when you say gutter filter? could you please elaborate to confirm if its what im thinking..

be mindful that canister filters can be nitrate factories if left for long periods of time.. but i do know of a few people who use them as biological filtration although we have recently fond them to be fantastic vessels for chemical filtration.. nice quick and easy to exchange media.. with little effort..

keep up the good work.. it seems as though you have found a harmony with this system..

It has not always been that way sir. At one stage I wanted to throw it out the door. That was a long time ago though ;)

If you look at the front view of the tank on the far right you will see two "up" pipes. One is for the cannister filter and the other goes straight up into the gutter filter. This water runs through a pipe with small holes drilled into it and spread a healthy flow of water over three compartments which are filled with Bio-Balls, 1 x small bag of Carbon and Filter Wool. I will try and take a photo one of these days and post it below.

As for the cannister filter being a nitrate factory. I clean the Filter Wool once every two weeks. This seems to work for me and have recently put a few small pieces of LR inside of it to allow more bacteria, tubeworms etc. to have a place to grow on.

Otherwise thanks for your kind words.

Trust me I feel your pain. At some stage (around 4-5 Months) I was not getting any joy. Through the kind acts of two Men and the good advice from my LFS. Plus a few of the guys / girls on this forum I made it through

Funny thing was during that time I was frustrated with myself more so than the tank :whistling:

Otherwise an awesome hobby and worth all the hours of frustration I must say

Three Geismann Powerchrome T5 HO Fluorescent Tubes. 1 x Blue and 2x White. My lighting is not terrible but not good enough for hard corals I have been told.

Just thought I would update this and make mention that I have eventually sold this system to a good home who moved the livestock into an already established tank :(

Regardless now comes the rehab of my home. Something which I could not do while my system was running. I hope to make a return to the hobby one day with all the experience I have gathered over the four years I had the system
