Hi Bell what test kits are you useing. Your Ph is to high you must aim for between 8.2 and 8.4 give your no3 and no2 time as the tank will start its cycle soon and what would your Ammonia reading be.

Does your skimmer work with the water so far up? Mine skims WAY too wet if it is over the Reeftek collar

Basically what happens is that the bioballs and ceramic rings catch alot of detritus and then you have a huge nitrate "factory" producing toxic chemicals that eventually will lead to the tank crashing - how long is the tank running?

They trap detritus and can cause nitrate spikes. Rather have a Deep Sand Bed and a refugium in yr sump. Is that one of those closed lid sumps with the sliding doors? If so I think I know where you got it from :) What I did was remove the baffle second from the left and made that into a Fuge/dsb

I am in Fourways gardens, just round the corner from you - hook up if you have any issues chap

If this sump is the same as the one that came with my tank (I prob know where from too) I really battled to get that damned skimmer working - had it on an ice cream tub eventually and battled to get the damn cup off...

Good thing is, I have been through it and know all the tricks ;)

Wet means that there is a lot of water going into the cup - skimmate should be dark and smelly, not clear.

Hmmmm, dont like those sumps, but you can make do.

I would suggest you read the following threads
