My first reef aquarium RSM 250

Thanks Joshua, I will wait for the algae first. I’m still new to this:m28:

Hi Kogan, yes it’s fine, particle size is from 0.25mm to 1.5mm. I used 30kg’s. It’s the Red Sea reef base pink mixed with ocean white.

ok cool and is the sand blowing about in the tank at all?

It does depending on how strong your water flow is in the tank. My main pump is a dcp 3500 running at 70% and my second pump is a dcp 2500 running at 90%. The sand doesn’t blow around at that speed.

Thanks for the info bud. Hoping to get my RSM250 up and running soon as well.

Hi, tagging along to see this, that scaping has a lot of potential...

My tank has been cycling for 3 weeks now and I’ve been testing weekly. To speed up the cycling process I used 10kg red seas live reef base sand and the Red Sea reef mature starter kit. My ammonia and nitrite levels are currently 0.1 and my nitrates are 20.

So the tank is going on 4 weeks now and I’m testing weekly. Water parameters are as follows:
Ammonia 0.1
Nitrite 0,05
Nitrate 10
Phosphate 0
Alkalinity 8.1
Ph 8.2
Salinity 36
Calcium 480
Magnesium 1600
Over the weekend I did a 20% water change, added a eheim 150 watt heater and 2 vortech mp40 pumps. Also got a tunze care magnet and cleaned the glass. I must say the tunze care magnets are amazing.

After reading various articles and posts, I’ve come to realize that once a tank has livestock, elements in the water are used up by the livestock and needs to be replenished. This is achieved through water changes and dosing. I presume dosing is better done on a daily basis as opposed to a weekly basis based on test results of each element and calculating a daily dosage. If one had to follow red seas reef care recipe, dosing manually on a daily can become a difficult chore if you have a busy lifestyle. Setting up an automatic dosing system is fairly simple, however if you plan on using red seas reef care recipe, that dosing system can become fairly large based on the number of supplements provided by Red Sea. Due to evaporation, water also needs to be replenished or else the salinity in the tank will increase. With all this being said, I have been been thinking of a simpler way to achieve daily dosing and water top ups. Please share your thoughts on the following:
Based on weekly testing in a stocked tank, you can establish the weekly consumption of each element. If you divide that usage by 7 days, you can establish a daily consumption. Let’s use the Red Sea reef foundatation as an example. If the consumption for calcium, magnesium and kh buffer is known and it’s calculated that I need to add 1 ml of each on a daily basis, can I take 700ml of RO water and add 7ml of calcium, 7ml of magnesium, 7ml of kh buffer and mix this solution. Then on a daily basis add a 100ml of this solution into the tank, or set this solution to a single dosing pump to add 100ml into the tank everyday. My thinking is that this will cater for replenishing the used elements and evaporated water. It will also be simpler as you mix the solution once a week after testing the tank and you only have to add the mixed solution daily rather than supplements from multiple bottles.

The only problem is that you can’t mix the alk/ca/mg supplements together in a small volume as it will create a snowstorm of precipitate. The amount of water that evaporates daily is also quite variable depending on the outside temperature. Best would be a separate top up container with RO and then a 3 channel doser for the main elements. Also look at Seachem Reef Fusion 1 and 2, it contains most of the main elements needed in only 2 different parts.

Thanks, with the sump of the RSM250 being at the back rather than under, will a dosing pump work considering the pump will be set up in the cupboard below with airline tubing running approximily 1.5m up to enter the tank.

The tanks doing well, water parameters are stable. Add the following live stock:
2 x hermits
1 x Turbo snail
1 x cleaner shrimp
1 x naso tang

Lost one of the clowns last week. Not sure how and why as the naso and the other clown seems to be perfectly healthy and eating well. On Friday I added a fire shrimp, however on Saturday I found him dead. I think my cleaner shrimp may have killed him so the past 2 weeks haven’t been good for me. All in all the tank is running well and the water parameters seem stable. Plan to add another fire shrimp this weekend but this time gonna keep him in one of those little Breeder boxes for a day to see what the cleaner shrimp does

My clown loves the camera
