    Howdy,
after my initial newby msgs I've been gone earning some income which took me out of the marine loop a while.
I had some time last week and done a drawing of my thoughts on the tank I want to build.
The pic is of the rear.
    Tank sz: 1000x600x600
Water level 50mm below top, with overflow box being 200mm deep.
I want to have 3 closed loops running at different times. Each CL will have 2 returns - one at back and one in bottom.

    My q's:
    1) Is this to much?
    2) Will all the holes weaken the panes to much?
    Comment/advice?

If you use 10mm glass it should be fine

I was thinking of 10 for sides and 15 for bottom, this calculate to safety factor of > 5.0, I think this will have good margin for the holes.

I would like to build this myself as I am that kind of person, just love doing things with my hands, I need some help on this.
    a) what additional support is needed at bottom?
    b) will a cross-brace at top be necessary?
    c) for the stand, do i use a piece of wood on the metal frame? if not should the tank only be supported on the sides or should the stand have 'beams' in-between as well?

any ideas on the return from the sump - to make it look nice?

    thx.

If you have a look at other tank builds you will see flat pieces of glass around the bottom of the tank that are siliconed to the bottom pane and to the side panes.
If you use sufficient eurobracing around the top then I don't think a top brace will be necessary, but wait for some more comments on this.
Yes, underneath the tank you will need a full sheet of polystyrene with a minimum thickness of 10mm, then under that you will need a full sheet of wood (marine ply is the best), this then all sits on top of the metal frame.

Neo are you putting a hood on this tank or will it be a hanging unit?

You can go one step further and cover the sheet in a layer of varnish (thined 75%) to ensure waterproofing... I know it shounds like an overkill to "waterproof" Marine ply, but rather be safe than sorry...

think this will be good - the stand - are you going to have it galvinised? (Spelling!!!!!!:whistling:)

Salt and metal don't do well!

I would go for euro bracing - cross bracing gets in the way and looks nasty. Can't see you needing it if the tank is 1m in length
