Hi all, after seeing some of the older MASA members showing off there awesome DIY skimmers :drool5: here I thought I should put my DIY skills to the test and see if I could build a skimmer that could save me thousands of Rands, and so I think have accomplished my goal:blush:, As im quite satisfied at the moment and it will be ready for action as soon as someone can advise me which pump will work best, as I have read that a slow flow rate trough the skimmer is better :confused1:

So the criteria would be a pump that’s not too strong and should have a suitable impeller? Any ideas would be appreciated. now heres some pics...

First of I use a cheap cereal dispenser to make the reaction chamber:whistling::biggrin:.

    1st bubble plate wasn’t adequate so:whistling:

I used the two lids to form the revised bubble plate and base.

WOW. Well done bro:bigthumbup: You have some mad DIY skills there. Everything looks like it was done by machine. Now i know why you've been lost all these days. What is the height of the whole unit? Looks like you need a base for it.

Thanks guys:thumbup:, as said im still looking for an appropriate pump to fire this baby up, i am thinking of purchasing one of the Hailea pumps that Dallas mentioned, as they good value for money and perfect for a DIY project. But before that i believe there is some adjustments to be made.:blush:as well as the instillation of a DIY ventury.

Last night my buddie Llewellyn brought to my attention that i may need to take it apart again and re-think the overflow pipe position:001_huh:. It will work as it is but, to increase performance and ensure that all the water leaving the skimmer has been skimmed i will need to install a cylinder on the bubble plate and move the overflow pipe above the plate and block the holes around the cylinder, as shown below

Thanks bud, just when i thought it was done:facepalm:
