So i have been on this site for a year and about 4 months now and been keeping marines now the same amount of time. In this time i have had a collection of very cool and crazy idees of what i want to create but with time i realised i have to try and be realistic.

I started building a tank way back in april last year and its still not done yet and probably wont be done anytime soon as ive got very high expectations for the tank and want it perfect - here is a link to that thread :

My litle setup(kinda) - Marine Aquariums of South Africa

Now the reason for posting this is because i took down all my current tanks and started selling some stuff off but now i am craving anouther tank so i decided i will set up a new tank that will keep me calm and keep my craving under controll untill i have finished my big tank.

The plan so far is a 2 foot tank, 600mm long * 300mm wide * 350mm high with water level at 300mm.

This will be an all in one tank that i will be running a mini CLS on and maybe one or two other pumps if i can get the correct pumps.

Here are some sketchup images of whats planned for the tank.

livestock - I am planning on putting 4 fish in the tank : a pair of purple fire gobies if i can get and then a pair of other small fish that i am yet to decide on.

CUC - I am planning a few small hermits, like say 5 or so, and then a few snails as well. I would also like to get those mini brittle stars that multiply so much, if possible so if anyone knows of anyone that has please tell me.

Lighting - i will be building lights into the Canopy, wich will or be 2 or three t5's or will be LED's, so far im leaning towards the LED's.

Filtration - due to the fact that this tank will be next to my bed i will not be using a skimmer and will try to keep the equipment used to a minimum. A sump will also not be used.

I will mainly use Live rock as a form of filtration, together with Purigen and activated carbon.

    Other equipment

    I will use a 50 or 100 watt heater
    A 1200 liter/hour pump will run the CLS(maybe 2000 liter/hour)

Any ideas or help is welcome.

    interesting idea

may i offer some suggestions.... in the "overflow" chamber make provision for several egg crate removable shelves, these you will be able to use for filter floss, carbon etc.

I dont really see the need for the baffle as you are not planning a skimmer ..... so maybe loose the baffle?

Also the cls nice in theory but why the need for the extended pipe... rather drill a hole or two in the back panel and have a pump pumping from there into the DT, the return becomes the flow?

    but just my 2c worth

basicly, im not very good at drawing unless its go 90 degree angles so the Extended pipe will actually have an upright in each back corner with elbows and in turn will be a mini CLS, the return will be running the Mini CLS.

I was thinking of adding one of those hang on filters they use for freshwater and run carbon and phosphate media in that, and then I was considdering adding a skimmer, i have a bh-100 hang on skimmer but it makes way to much noise so i have to switch it off at night, but now i have maybe sourced a Reef octopus NS-80 nano skimmer wich is rated for 80 liters so maybe this tank will still have a skimmer after all just not hundred percent sure about it.

Filter floss is the bomb for particulate filtration. I strongly suggest you make a slim basket that fits in the baffle so you can replace the floss in a single swift motion... :) The number one PITA for me is changing my filter floss... doing it daily isn't a stress if its easy as pie :)

So i will be ordering my tank next month from frans in 10mm glass, and the lights will also be ordered next month. Ill be using 18 high powered 3W LED's for the setup, and if that turns out to not be enough i have space to add 6 more.

Ill also be ordering a vortech mp10 later on once everything is set up and ready to go.

They will be 50/50 blue/white LED

they will be in strings of 6 each and will be dimable to obtain the light i want.

The cost of them is extremely expensive but ive just decided that its worth it.

Frans i will be doing them myself in a custom build, ive been in contact with evil66 on nanoreeef.com and he has helped me choose quite alot of things.

Frans if i may ask above your holding tanks you dont nessaseraly need lots of light so why not use the led strips?

That is the spacing i will use for the LED's.

The B row will work on its own timer coming on before the others and staying on longer than Rows A.

The blue is obviously blue LED's and the yellow is cool white LED's

Here is the cabinet i designed for this tank to stand on, the cabinet is to double up as a bedside table as well. so in the open part on the left will be the equipment and RO reservoir but the right will be reserved fo books or whatever.
