    Hi All,

I am currently running a Boyu 550 and decided to upgrade to something bigger.
I bought this tank from a fellow reefer and ill be setting it up over the next 2-3 months.

Doing things slowly this time as I learned lots of hard lessons with my nano.

    New Tank Dimensions 1.5mx850x700.

Here are the pics while we are loading the tank.

Currently my Sump is cycling with a piece of live rock from my old tank a few pieces of base rock and a piece of fish. Only planning on buying heaters on Saturday so its cycling at room temperature.

Here is a list of the equipment I still plan to get. Any comments are welcome. I am now also looking at getting a LED Light Kit from RapidLED.

Its 12mm glass. Double on the bottom with the 12 mm bracing on the top.

Nice size. Just add some overflow boxes to the overflow and turn the elbows so that they face down. Otherwise you will get the constant gurgling sound. Your overflow and returns are exactly how I used to have mine before I installed the overflow boxes.

Do you have a pick of what they look like now? I have never seen an overflow box (i think) so not sure what they are or how they work.

This is the best one I have at the moment. I think I have some closeups at home if you need more.

You can just turn your overflow elbows facing down but the negative it that your tank will back syphon a crap load of water back into the sump and a low waterlevel inside the tank. By facing them up you get the gurgling sound but no much backflow and the correct water level you want. So by adding the overflow boxes you can now face the elbows down that will eliminate the noise, have the correct water level you want and you will not have much water draining back into the sump when the return goes off in the event of a power failure.

Thanks that's awesome. Will definitely look at getting those. I did see the tank while it was running and it wasnt that loud. But will see once its filled up if i need the overflow boxes.

hello CocaColaza, welcome to masa I dont think ive welcomed you before:)

thats a wonderful upgrade to go friom the nano to this size, great dimensions on the tank too, lots of width for aquascaping which is great:)

Im not sure where you are from, but if that was my tank I would look at doing a propper overflow box like marius has suggested. Personally Id load that tank up and drive to Idol marine and ask them to fir a slim line overflow (they are the best at doing these overflows in JHB, in my opinion). A slim line central overflow would give you a far better asthetic than over flow boxes and can be wider so as to skim better off the surface.

i realy do recciomend a propper overflow system to the sump, there are so many positives for it, you wont regret it at all.

Thanks yeah i buy most of my stuff from Idol. Will have a chat to Rob about the overflow boxes. Just want to get it up and running and see how bad the noise is.

Marius your tank looks awesome. Which lights do you have hanging there?

Thanks. Those are 250W aquamedic MH pendents with 20K BLV globes in. Ironically the first owner of those lights were Adriaan from Idol.

believe you me when I say I know the desire to justb get a tank up and running, i have that urge everytime i start a new tank up. BUT a good overflow is not just about the noise level, the skimming off of the surface, the ability of detritus to get to and over the over flow etc etc are all very important factors in a tank. That tank may have worked well before, but it will work better with a decent overflow. Chat to Adriaan about it:)
