On Saturday my purple monti that I had been searching for for ages and have had for about 4 weeks was looking good and I was very proud of it.

On Sunday at about lunchtime when the lights were fully on I was showing it to @butcherman & @Hails when I noticed the huge Munch marks on both sides of the coral. We pulled the coral out and there was a small starfish on the coral plug. We assumed that this is what was grinding away at the monti. There are a few flat worms in the tank but i don't think flatworms will grind away at the coral skeleton.

Here is a pic of the coral showing the damage to both sides, that I took a little later in the afternoon.:(

So this morning I got up earlier than normal and proceeded to shine my diving torch at the monti.

To my horror half my coral was gone........ and two hairy crabs were happily Munching at Neptunes tea party.:(

To catch these two unwanted guests is going to be a huge issue. No doubt the SPS tank upgrade will get hurried along somewhat if i want any corals left.

Check the damage they did last night.

How big are the crabs in relation to the coral that they can do so much damage in one night? Guess you did not know they were in there?

The bigger one is about the size of the top half of the coral that is left. The other about 3/4 the size of the bigger one.

I have not put anything into the tank other than corals. And I check the corals thoroughly before adding to the tank. I guess they have grown up in the tank over time.

Did have some colonies of SPS that mysteriously declined. When a fraged them they all recovered.

Just shows how complacent one can get.
