Hi,

I'm looking for a friend for my moorish idol... His eating everything I put in the tank and doing amazingly well.

I would like to get him a friend as I have heard they do better in pairs.
Please let me know if you know anyone selling or at a lfs

Thanks

Just be careful, two might not get along, except perhaps in a massive tank or if you are lucky enough to get them to pair up, which is apparently not easy.

I have heard stories of guys trying a second moorish in 5000 liter plus tanks and one still killing the other one. If you do get another one, be sure to socially acclimate without them being able to get to each other like in a perspex box.

It is risky to try another one, especially if current one is doing well, might end up getting the current one hurt due to aggression by new one or vice versa. So just be patient in introductions and don't rush it, maybe you are lucky and they pair up, would be awesome to have a Moorish pair.

In wild they are mostly swimming on their own, only sometimes in pairs or massive groups.

I caught mine last year May in Durban, it was far away from any other moorishes. Not sure where you read they do better in pairs, it might be, but to pair them up is not easy when you have an established one already.

Okay great thx... I will do more research about it... I do agree when we dive they separate but pairs are very common too... Do you think it may be cause of gender. Any idea how to sex them?

No idea how to sex them, probably not possible from external characteristics like most tang types I would think. Try to study pics of pairs and see if there are differences?

Also don't think they are able to change sex like angelfish, wrasses and clowns, probably born a certain sex and stay that way their whole life.

Yeah agreed... Will do further research. Don't want to stress out my original moorish as he is so happy

you unfortunately need to introduce them together in your system at the same time.
What I have researched on it, if they are similar size there is a chance of them still being compatible.

Not sure still if I'm keen to take the chance of affecting my existing one. Ill much rather have him happy and eating.

Do not make the mistake of adding a second one - moorish do not tolerate each other in a tank (conspecifics) - the one will kill the other.
